“According to a new survey of college admissions directors by Inside Higher Ed, the admissions strategy judged most important is the recruitment of more out-of-state and international students, who can pay significantly more at public institutions. Ten percent of those surveyed also reported admitting full-pay students with lower grades and test scores than other admitted applicants, and a majority of schools either use or plan to use controversial commission-paid agents to recruit foreign students (commission-based recruitment is barred in the U.S.). ‘This isn’t about globalization or increased educational diversity,’ asserts USC’s Jerome A. Lucido. ‘They need the money.’ So, should employees of a public university where the President’s annual compensation exceeds $1 million receive a full state-funded pension for educating 16,000+ out-of-state students?”

Guess this is yet another reason why the Gooferment shouldn’t be in “education” business?

RANT: The essence of the struggle for the soul of America

Free to Die
By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: September 15, 2011

*** begin quote ***

The second is that very few of those who die from lack of medical care look like Mr. Blitzer’s hypothetical individual who could and should have bought insurance. In reality, most uninsured Americans either have low incomes and cannot afford insurance, or are rejected by insurers because they have chronic conditions.

So would people on the right be willing to let those who are uninsured through no fault of their own die from lack of care? The answer, based on recent history, is a resounding “Yeah!”

Think, in particular, of the children.

Krugman and the New Moralizing

*** begin quote ***

According to Krugman, ONLY the Welfare State can ensure the moral outcomes; anything else is immoral, and those who object to any aspect of the Welfare State are immoral monsters who just want to see others suffer and starve. Am I exaggerating? Read the column and you will see what I mean.

*** end quote ***

Upon reflection, it seems to me that:

(1) The Welfare / Warfare State fueled by the Federal Reserve Bank’s printing press and controlled by all the “BIG” groups (i.e., the military industrial complex, Wall Street, the trial lawyers, Big Unions, Big Banks, Big Pharma, Big Auto, Big Gooferment, …) impoverishes everyone. The elite rich have the capability and resources to ride the storm that the poor, old, and middle class don’t.

(2) American’s are the most generous people on the planet. Even with inflation and high taxes, they continue to support charities. Why would that change when more wealth is retained by those who create it?

(3) The Gooferment is excluding all private efforts and transferring that control to bureaucrats. How can that be good?

the rest of you, you’re on your own

*** begin quote ***

The Republican plan for addressing the long-term deficit can be summed up this way: Leave the rich alone and pass along the costs to the rest of us.

*** end quote ***

I believe what they are saying is: “No new taxes”. I’d prefer them to say: “No taxes”, but that will never happen as long as they have the guns.

Taxes are an immoral theft.

But over and above that, raising taxes in a down economy is economic suicide.

They will have to cut spending. Before they “drive” the economy into total collapse.

Everyone is looking at the uncertainty ahead — how much will an employee cost me? — what are the economic prospects ahead? — what are these idiots in DC doing? — and waiting for the storm to pass.

I personally like Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan. At least it’s easy to understand. I doubt we can ever pass it. Since the politicians and bureaucrats will be fighting for pennies. That’s not a bad thing. Just never going to happen.

Everyone is ALWAYS on their own. We need more “rowers” and fewer “free riders”.

Obama invites GE’s Immelt to jobs speech
by Dave Boyer
Published on September 8, 2011

*** begin quote ***

The White House’s invited guests who will hear President Obama speak to Congress tonight about creating jobs for the common man include a CEO under fire for moving jobs to China and a mayor who recently built a six-foot wall around his mansion.

Jeffrey Immelt, chairman of GE and head of the president’s jobs council, tops the list of invited guests who will listen to Mr. Obama’s speech from the first lady’s box in the House chamber.

Mr. Immelt has been criticized for GE’s plan to move the headquarters of its x-ray business to Beijing; Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich, Ohio Democrat, has even called on him to resign from his presidential post promoting U.S. jobs.

*** end quote ***

This guy, Immelt, is a perfect example of what’s wrong with this picture.

Crony capitalism, globalism gone awry, and tax breaks for “friends”.

The original intent was that the Government was funded from tariffs. Those tariffs would have prevented GE from taking those jobs to China.

Maybe the car industry could have saved itself from the unfair competition of social costs on them but not on imports.

We need a little economic nationalism here.

People and products need to cross borders easily. But that doesn’t mean stupidly!

RANT: Listend to Crummy about SS and Ponzi

Friday, September 9, 2011

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Crummey

Today, I listened to Crummy argue that SS was NOT a Ponzi scheme.

Au contraire … …

In a very technical sense, it’s not. In a Ponzi, the victims have a the choice NOT to participate; in “social security insurance”, there’s no choice.

A caller challenged and he objected to the word “fraudulent”. He’s wrong! SSI was sold to the American people that it would always be tax free. It’s not! It was sold as “insurance”. It’s not! It was sold as retirement savings and disability insurance. It’s not.

It IS a fraud because the “lockbox” is full do IOUs. And, the “terms” change at the whims of Congress.

In last night’s debate, Herman Cain correctly cited Chile in the 1970’s escaping the trap of “social security becomes welfare”.

We need to learn from Chile. We need to call things as they are.

Screwed Up!

Nightmare On Pennsylvania Avenue

The Dollar Vigilante

*** begin quote ***

Thank goodness I was strapped in tight! Are you kidding, Krueger? I can refute your entire book in one sentence and there is no rational thing you can say in response. Ready?

If that is true then raise the minimum wage to $1,000/hour and tell me how that will not result in unemployment rising to 99.5% or higher. At that rate, only people currently making more than $1,000/hour would be employable.

I mean, really. This is Obama’s new senior advisor?? This will probably shock him then, but removing the minimum wage completely would result in full employment. Heck, I’d even hire Alan Krueger to wash my car all day long for $0.15/hour. That may be something he is actually good at, too.

*** end quote ***

Isn’t that the million dollar question?

What’s the “correct” minimum wage?

Depends if you treasure liberty?

Answer is zero.

It’s not the Gooferment’s biz what two willing individuals agree to.

RANT: Social Security and other “entitlements”

Reawakening Virtues: Social Security and The Virtue of Saving by Armstrong Williams

*** begin quote ***

Let’s be clear. Social security is not an entitlement program. That is, unlike welfare and food stamps, the people who receive social security have contributed to the program over the course of their working career through payroll taxes specifically designated for the purpose of saving for retirement. They are therefore owed at least the amount of money they contributed.

However, problems started to arise when the Federal government, under both parties, began borrowing from the so-called Social Security trust funds to spend on other items in the budget. The trust funds are not like your traditional private trust funds that are fully funded. In fact these trust funds are empty. The government has borrowed every single dime that comes into the trust funds to spend on current expenditures. We have a problem now because our total national debt is approaching (and may have exceeded) our yearly gross domestic product. Most countries that have this level of debt do not enjoy the high credit rating and low borrowing costs that America currently does.

*** end quote ***

http://www.billoreilly.com/video

Now Playing: Social Security “entitlement?”

*** begin quote ***

Why do many in the media keep referring to Social Security as an “entitlement” program? That’s what a BillOReilly.com Premium Member asks Bill in this excerpt from our newest Backstage Conversation webcast.

*** end quote ***

There’s no money for anything.

An insurance executive, that did what the Gooferment has done (i.e., spent the insurance premiums and failed to pay claims), would be in jail. But politicians and bureaucrats get away with it.

So, if there’s nothing in the Social Security Insurance “lockbox” but IOUs “backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government”. That ain’t going to make for a safe and secure retirement unless you’re planning to work in the “mines” until you die!

Sorry to tell everyone. It’s welfare.

Watch for inflation while there is no COLA or phony rates published by “honest” Gooferment bureaucrats, higher taxes on “social security insurance” income (Yeah that was never supposed to happen!), and then just schedule “adjustments” (i.e., higher minimum ages; lower benefit amounts).

It’s worse than a Ponzi scheme because you don’t get NOT to participate. “Made-off” couldn’t MAKE you give him your money!

My Life in Key West

Key West Lou

*** begin quote ***

Included topic wise will be some comment on the many CEO’s of major corporations whose pay is greater than what their companies pay in taxes. In most instances, the major coprporations pay no taxes.

Which…..proves the point that our tax system is out of whack and needs replacing. Too many loopholes. I say throw the whole thing out and go to a flat tax.

Another item to be discussed is the proposed law in California to require minimum wage to be paid adult babysitters. That does not bother me. Most babysitters are well paid. Much more per hour than minimum wage.

*** end quote ***

The correct corporate tax rate is ZERO! Corporations don’t pay taxes; only real human beings pay taxes. A corporation is a fiction. All it does it pass along its costs in its products and services. For real people to pay. The Gooferment loves this because it hides taxation. Buy a can of beans. How much tax did you pay hidden in that can? Don’t forget the gasoline tax to deliver those cans. You’ll never be able to figure it out and that’s exactly the point. If the corporation can’t cover its costs, it goes out of business. It’s a joke.

If people knew the true cost of Gooferment, it’d be the French Revolution all over again.

Minimum wage laws are dumb. If you and I agree on a wage, what right does the Gooferment have to tell us we can’t? It ensures that we have unemployment. When is “nothing” better than “something”? When the Gooferment can “give” welfare under the guise of “helping”. Argh! To preempt the argument of “living wage”, don’t we have the “earned income tax credit”? Argh!

Minimum wage is a tax on business which gets passed along in higher prices. Argh!

And, don’t forget inflation. The cruelest tax on people. Especially the poor, those on fixed incomes. Your wealth is stolen silently. And, don’t tell me there’s no inflation. Like 9% unemployment, zero inflation is a cruel Gooferment joke. Save your cereal boxes, write the price paid on the box, compare a few boxes. Watch the contents go down as the price goes up. Then tell me there’s no inflation.

Liberals are so naive.

Duty to Warn
The Bombing of Nagasaki August 9, 1945: Another Example of Christians Killing Christians in the Name of Christ
by Gary G. Kohls

*** begin quote ***

So, at 11:02 am, August 9, 1945, in the middle of morning mass, the Christians of Nagasaki were boiled, evaporated and carbonized in a scorching, radioactive fireball that was several times hotter than the sun. The vibrant center of Japanese Christianity was wiped out. It had become Ground Zero.

And what the Japanese Imperial government could not do in over 250 years of persecution, American Christians had done in 9 seconds. 8,500 of Nagasaki’s worshipping community of 12,000 perished that day. None of those who died were combatants.

*** and ***

Perhaps the next military atrocities like Nagasaki, Fallujah and My Lai can be prevented if a substantial number of Christian churches courageously and publicly start to resist the militaristic policies of their nations by actively refusing their government’s call for the bodies and souls of their sons and daughters.

If the churches start to exercise their sacred duty to warn their parishioners about the soul-destroying nature of war, it may not be too late to save our dying, war-torn, morally and financially bankrupt planet.

Heeding the lessons of Nagasaki is a good way to start.

*** end quote ***

Hard to read this or see the picture.

And, the various churches, who supposedly revere the Prince of Peace, seem to be out sync with the meme.

How does one reconcile this militarism, empire, and killing?

Diocese of Orange raises bid for Crystal Cathedral
By Marianne Medlin

*** begin quote ***

Garden Grove, Calif., Aug 11, 2011 / 05:59 am (CNA).- The Diocese of Orange upped its previous bid and signaled openness to new negotiations for the Crystal Cathedral after board members recently announced that the building is no longer for sale.

*** and ***

The liturgist for the Orange diocese, Monsignor Arthur Holquin, said July 26 that several changes would need to take place in order for the Crystal Cathedral to become a Catholic worship space.

Along with a central altar, a tabernacle and a baptismal font, the building would need a “cathedra” or bishop’s chair. While renovations are needed to the building, “not much deconstruction would be required and the iconic personality of the original architecture and design would, for the most part, be retained,” he said.

Purchasing the Crystal Cathedral is an attractive option for the diocese because it provides an instant solution to its building needs and would cost roughly half the $100 million price tag for the planned Santa Ana cathedral.

Though the diocese made an official $50 million bid for the Crystal Cathedral on July 22, the church’s board later voted against selling it and decided to appeal to church members and viewers to donate the funds instead.

*** end quote ***

Guess I just don’t understand.

Couldn’t God be worshiped in an appropriately decorated warehouse?

As far as the “bishop’s chair”, I have a old folding chair to donate. Won’t that hold a butt.

$100M$?

Reminds me of the French’s Maginot Line and Patton’s famous apocryphal remark “fixed fortifications are monuments to man’s stupidity”.

Maybe a cathedral is marketing? Of an idea who’s time has past. “Big Church” must join the dustbin of failed concepts like: Big Gooferment, Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Labor, Big Biz, “Too Big To Fail” (2B2F), Social Security “Insurance”, the misnamed Federal Reserve Bank, Wall Street, Fiat Paper aka “monopoly money”, and all such stupidity?

It’s always sad when the illusions and delusions die. And all we are left with is the wreckage.

Is it too late to rebuild from the pieces?

Bike Lanes Create Jobs. You did indeed, read that correctly. A recent study from the University of Massachusetts found that bike infrastructure projects create more jobs than road infrastructure. Their latest study showed that bike and pedestrian projects generate 46 percent more employment than roads. An I.O.U. that you write to yourself and that you yourself hold might be a useful accounting device, but it is not wealth. Unfortunately, many politicians and bureaucrats enamored with Social Security lie (the word is not too strong) repeatedly about the nature of these bonds and what they imply about the solvency of Social Security.

Even if one bought an annuity with their “Social Security Insurance” “contributions”, then you’d have a chance of a return. Even a Ponzi scheme is more moral; the scammer can’t MAKE you give your wealth away. The Gooferment will kill you if you don’t.

Shared Sacrifice in the Fiscal Crisis
David Boaz – July 18, 2011

*** begin quote ***

Currently the top one-tenth of 1 percent of American taxpayers pay 18 percent of the income taxes. The top 1 percent pay 38 percent of the income taxes, and the top 5 percent of taxpayers pay 59 percent of all income taxes. Just what percentage do President Obama and his allies think would be appropriate?

*** and ***

But here’s a way to satisfy both those who see spending as the problem and those who want the highest-taxed Americans to pay yet more: Start cutting subsidies to businesses and the rich. Let’s cut out the big-business subsidy machine, the Export-Import Bank. Let’s get rid of farm subsidies. Let’s tell affluent people who build houses in coastal flood areas to pay for their own flood insurance at market prices.

*** end quote ***

I like to point out that “corporate taxes” are a sham. Only “real people” pay taxes. Corporations either pass along their costs or fold. When Exxon pays taxes, they pass it along in every gallon of gas. Also, every corporation, that uses that gas with taxes built in, adds that cost to their cost. So when you pick up a can on bean in the supermarket, you are paying all those taxes. We can’t even figure out what we are paying in taxes. imho

New York City, N.Y., Jul 16, 2011 / 08:52 pm (CNA).- The Vatican congratulated South Sudan, the world’s newest country, for its admission to the United Nations on July 14.

Excuse me?

Why is the American Taxpayer paying for the UN?

Another country on the dole.

More politicians and bureaucrats created as opposed to productive workers.

More people in poverty from supporting a new “priestly” class.

Another to vote against us in the “General Assembly”.

More embassies!

Another set of DPL plates in NYC.

Argh!

Who Put Hannibal Lecter in Charge of Government Spending Cuts?
by Michael Cloud

*** begin quote ***

“What kind of heartless, sadistic animal are YOU?” demand Opponents of cutting government spending.

You remember Hannibal Lecter, don’t you? Perhaps you cringed while watching Anthony Hopkins portray him in “Silence of the Lambs.” Or perhaps you read Thomas Harris’ novels featuring him.

*** and ***

So why are opponents of government spending cuts letting Hannibal Lecter decide what to cut?

Why would opponents of government spending reductions appoint someone who takes delight in finding the most cruel ways to inflict pain?

But those are the wrong questions. Here are the right questions:

Why are opponents trying to convince Americans that any and every government spending reduction would inflict pain and injury?

Why are opponents of government spending cuts trying to scare us, guilt us, shame us, malign us, and intimidate us into shutting up?

How do they get away with this farce?

*** end quote ***

Yup, it’s a joke.

Any cut is a bad cut!

RANT: “Default”? No way, not needed

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

As a political junkie, I’m enraged when some bozo (i.e., politician and /or bureaucrat) is allowed by some talking head to say “default” without opposition.

IMHO any reasonable person would pay the interest on the debt first, then the social security and other mandatory welfare payments, and come up with a “total must pay”. Subtract that total from the budget to come up with “what’s left to pay”. Subtract “total must pay” from current receipts for “what’s left”.

Divide “what’s left” by “what’s left to pay” and that’s the haircut that the budget must be slashed by.

No one is going to be happy, but no default. It’ll set off a lot of wailing and gnashing but that’s what fiscal discipline is all about.

That’s why I say don’t raise the debt ceiling. And, don’t let politicians and bureaucrats scare old people by saying no soc sec or the markets by saying default.
