The man who got the four-year sentence would’ve walked out of jail today, given time served for the 2011 attack as well as reductions due to prison overcrowding in California, but for the fact that the two attackers will now stand trial on federal weapons charges by a lucky fluke. (They weren’t armed at the time of the attack. But a search of their homes yielded a stash of five guns hidden in an attic that allegedly belonged to one man but were being held by the other. Neither is allowed to possess firearms because they’re both convicted felons.) If found guilty on the federal gun charge, each man could face up to 10 more years in a federal prison.

Obama Delays Health-Insurance Requirement for Some Employers
A batch of employers won’t face a fine next year if they fail to provide health insurance to their workers, the Obama administration said Monday.

In regulations outlining the Affordable Care Act, the Treasury Department said employers with between 50 and 99 full-time workers won’t have to comply with the law’s requirement to provide insurance or pay a fee until 2016.

Companies with 100 workers or more could avoid penalties in 2015 if they showed they were offering coverage to at least 70% of their full-time workers, Treasury said.

House Votes to Suspend Debt Ceiling Until March 2015
The House voted to suspend the nation’s borrowing limit until March 16, 2015, without any policy conditions, a tactical retreat by Republicans stymied by their internal divisions.

The bill cleared the House in a 221-201 vote, relying on the support of a majority of Democrats and pushing the next debate over the issue until after the 2014 midterm elections. Most Republicans opposed the debt-ceiling suspension, which came to the floor without any of the policy proposals they hoped would sweeten its sting for conservatives.

The measure now heads to the Democratic-controlled Senate, where leaders have expressed optimism it will soon pass.

Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman Found Dead
Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday afternoon in his New York City apartment, a law-enforcement official said.

The cause of death is under investigation. The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46 years old, was found dead at his apartment in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan.

Mr. Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 2005 film “Capote.”

Just before the election. How convenient.

That was totally unbelievable at the time, and I and others said so then.

In my Forbes column the very next week, “President Obama’s Unemployment Still Stuck at 14.7%,” I noted how inconsistent the supposed unemployment drop was with other contemporaneous economic data.

The sharp unemployment drop supposedly resulted from a total of 114,000 new jobs created in September, 2012, according to the Establishment Survey of business payrolls of the Bureau of Labor Statistics that the Obama Administration had been emphasizing throughout its first term.

But economist John Lott noted at Foxnews.com that the working age population had grown by 206,000 in September, 2012. With normal labor force participation during a recovery from a steep recession, that would have required 138,000 new jobs that month, just to keep pace with population growth, let alone to reduce the unemployment rate.

Moreover, the BLS also reported for September, 2012 that the number of full-time jobs declined by 216,000 in that month.

This is not the coldest I’ve ever been.

USAF Survival School someplace in the pacific northwest Idaho Washington border. Not snowing; that would have been warmer. Wet from rain on the hour as demanded by the trainers; it was survival school. Temperature was 100 below, or felt that way. And, we weren’t allowed to hunker down, but had to move 5 miles a day. Doesn’t sound like a lot, but it was through what they called a “slash forrest”. Every other tree was over on its side. Not cut, but blown. Did I mention the wind? Yeah, it too felt like 100 mph. The phrase “witch’s *** in a brass *** in the middle of January” comes to mind. 

That was cold.

This is merely annoying.

Imagine what TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It) will be like.
