Stunningly simple piece of advice.

Wish I’d heard it decades ago.

QUOTE: “A good gauge of a statement’s fallacy is the conviction with which it is delivered.”

Monday, November 24, 2014

Heard one that I really like and want to share.

“A good gauge of a statement’s fallacy is the conviction with which it is delivered.”

—reported by Michael Greger M.D. in Weekly NutritionFacts.org Videos for 11/16/2014

So very very true.

I’m thinking “global warming”, “the good war” (oxymoron), and “(drug) prohibition”!

QUOTE: ON positive and negative

Thursday, October 23, 2014

We must look for the opportunity in every difficulty, instead of being paralyzed at the thought of the difficulty in every opportunity.
~Walter E. Cole

The pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; the optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.
~L.P. Jacks

# – # – # – # – #

Unfortunately, this makes us pessimists look dumb.

With apologies to Doctor Norman Vincent Peale (May 31, 1898 – December 24, 1993) was a minister and author of “The Power of Positive Thinking”, who I heard speak in person more than once; thanks to a “Comparative Christian Religions” Theology course required of all Engineers.

I often cite “Reinke’s Rule” (egotistically named after a fat old white guy injineer named me) which states: “Expect the worst and every surprise will be to the good side.”

This means by not expecting sunshine and lollypops, by not presuming an easy journey, one can be prepared to overcome ALL obstacles. That careful consideration before embarking allows one to fully commit to the goal and be positive you will attain it.

My 3 confirming examples comes from post-graduate education opportunities:

* I had the opportunity to get my MBA. With a bunch of co-workers. Three years at night. Fall, Spring, and Summer. No partial credit for not finishing. Completed. Piece of cake. Actually enjoyed it.

* I then had the opportunity to go to law school with the same cadre I took my MBA with. It was 6 years of the same Fall, Spring, and Summer. With real work and a bar exam. No partial credit. I declined. Of the 20 that started; only 4 finished. And, one never passed the bar. 3/20 = 15%!

* I had the opportunity to get my MS CompSci. Had to go it alone; no comrades. That was hard! Three years at night. Fall, Spring, and Summer. No partial credit for not finishing. Completed.

Upon reflection, I should have gone to Law School. I regret it today.

But I wonder how I would feel if I was one of the 17 versus one of the 3?

And, when makes such a decision, one doesn’t know what costs were hidden along the way. Six summer vacations come to mind.

So, I’ll stick with “Reinke’s Rule”. You OTOH have follow your own paradigms and memes. YMMV!

QUOTE: Walter Block on “Protectionism”

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

Protectionism is a misnomer. The only people protected by tariffs, quotas and trade restrictions are those engaged in uneconomic and wasteful activity. Free trade is the only philosophy compatible with international peace and prosperity. – Walter Block

QUOTE: Ayn Rand

Thursday, April 18, 2013

“The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.” – Ayn Rand

Too many times, the only one who can stop me is me.

Sadly, when I was young, I liked the habits that today imprison me.

So the past me, stopped the future me.

Argh!

“This too shall pass”.

QUOTE: Churchill’s pigs

Wednesday, April 3, 2013

“I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.” – Winston Churchill

I am watching a show about the poor in RIo.

Sad to see so much human capital wasted!

When I think of what I pay in “taxes” — that is nothing more than theft for fat connected cates, it makes me sad.

But then everything thse days seems to make me sad!

QUOTE: Not enough to cover the giant web of obligations

Thursday, March 28, 2013

“What remains are games of musical chairs, Ponzi schemes, frauds, swindles, stonewalls, ruses, ploys, scams, dodges, bluffs, subterfuges, QE martingales, interventions, rehypothecations, pretenses and other modes of evading or disguising reality. The reality is that there is not enough real wealth to go around, certainly not enough to cover the giant web of obligations that masquerades as ‘money.'” – James Howard Kunstler in an essay titled The Cyprus Fiasco Is A Metaphor For The Entire Global Financial System

Monday, March 25, 2013

“Why do you allow these men who are in power to rob you step by step, openly and in secret, of one domain of your rights after another, until one day nothing, nothing at all will be left but a mechanised state system presided over by criminals and drunks?” –  Die Weisse Rose (The White Rose), Resistance Leaflet 3, 1942

QUOTE: Sowell “betters”

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Freedom is not simply the right of intellectuals to circulate their merchandise. It is, above all, the right of ordinary people to find elbow room for themselves and a refuge from the rampaging presumptions of their “betters.”

QUOTE: An un Happy Anniversary

Monday, December 19, 2011

“He that outlives a wife whom he has long loved, sees himself disjoined from the only mind that has the same hopes, and fears, and interest; from the only companion with whom he has shared much good and evil; and with whom he could set his mind at liberty, to retrace the past or anticipate the future. The continuity of being is lacerated; the settled course of sentiment and action is stopped; and life stands suspended and motionless.” — Samuel Johnson (1709-84), English author

Happy Anniversary, my love.

QUOTE: … the tax would be paid by the cows

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

http://cafehayek.com/2011/08/quotation-of-the-day-35.html

Quotation of the Day…
by DON BOUDREAUX on AUGUST 16, 2011
in SEEN AND UNSEEN, TAXES

*** begin quote ***

… is from EconLog’s David Henderson who recalls how the Herbert Stein described the failure to understand that taxes on corporations are taxes on people:

“I remember that in addressing the issue in the 1980s, the late Herb Stein said that it’s as if people think that if the government imposed a tax on cows, the tax would be paid by the cows.”

*** end quote ***

This reaffirms my RANT about the fact that a “corporation” is a fiction for a mob of real people. WHICH does nothing but hide the taxes in costs passed along to REAL people.

Argh!

QUOTE: “… simply because it is right.”

Saturday, August 6, 2011

“Cowardice asks the question: is it safe? Expediency asks the question: is it political? Vanity asks the question: is it popular? But conscience asks the question: is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor political, nor popular – but one must take it simply because it is right.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

So, the next time someone talks about some large group of collective people as “we” or take credit for events they never had anything to do with, be like Doug Stanhope and tell them, maybe “we” should just shut the f*#k up.

So there ain’t no “we”!

Like the old Lone Ranger joke, “what u mean we kimosabe”!
