Ep. 1043 Spontaneous Order or Lord of the Flies?
An Inside Look at a School That Puts Students in Charge
21st November 2017 Tom Woods

A promotional video about this school sparked a heated debate among listeners in my private Facebook group. The video describes the school as having no classrooms, tests, or homework, in which the students direct and evaluate themselves, etc. Is this a natural model for libertarians, or is it just plain silly? I talk to a staff member and a student at the school in today’s episode.

I bet I would have done well in a school like this.

“Institutional prisons” replaced by a different meme!

Remember that the “Prussian model” for education was to create cannon fodder for the Army, willing morons for the factories, and useful idiots to vote for and be led by the elite. Remember that the “elite” cite NEVER sent their children to the “public school”.

Argh!

Great idea.

INSPIRATIONAL: Let’s see if there is a real problem or if it’s just “optics”

I Used to Sit for the National Anthem Too
But here’s the question: Is the ‘police brutality’ that NFL players are protesting based in reality?
By Jason L. RileySept. 26, 2017 6:13 p.m. ET

*** begin quote ***

An increase in press coverage of police shootings isn’t the same thing as an increase in police shootings.

*** end quote ***

As a vet and a little L libertarian, I am conflicted.

I respect that the Dead Old White Guys and lot of good young women and men have sacrificed lives, blood, tears, and sweat for the ideal the Flag and Anthem represent.

I also know that the ideal is long gone and that freedom and liberty are barely holding on.

So what should one do.

Boycott the NFL?

Seems a silly response. Respect the views being expressed — whatever they are — damned if I know.

OR —  “Move along, people. Nothing to see here. Go home, you looky-loos.” Officer Barbrady’s Catch Phrase South Park

I think the reasonable approach is to: demilitarize the police, require a uniform police reporting system for officer involved shootings, and transparency.

For example, why aren’t police body cams and car cams ever off?

(Sidenote: I think that politicians and bureaucrats should have to wear them 24/7 also. Remember ABSCAM?)

For example, a felon recently used a gun and it was reported that he was released after 4 years of a 5 year “felon in possession” offense. Sorry DJT45 should pass the word — on “felon in possession”, no plea deals, vigorous prosecution, opposition to any early release, and federal time for such. That should  “disarm” the bad guys.

For example, let’s have a DOJ review of any officer involved shooting, which if warranted should be prosecuted by the DOJ in a federal court.

For example, let’s put pressure on the various State and City Gooferments to protect their citizens. The murder rate in Chicago specifically is unacceptable.

With those reforms, let’s see if there is a real problem or if it’s just “optics”.

INSPIRATIONAL: “Worrying takes up cognitive resources”

Expressing Ourselves Through Writing Helps Us Handle Stress
By: Katie Medlock September 23, 2017

“Worrying takes up cognitive resources; it’s kind of like people who struggle with worry are constantly multitasking—they are doing one task and trying to monitor and suppress their worries at the same time,” lead author Hans Schroder, an MSU doctoral student in psychology and a clinical intern at Harvard Medical School’s McLean Hospital, told Science Daily. “Our findings show that if you get these worries out of your head through expressive writing, those cognitive resources are freed up to work toward the task you’re completing and you become more efficient.”

*** end quote ***

Interesting. I should try this since lately I’ve been worrying a lot. That in and of itself IS very unusual for me since I think I am a “take it as it comes and roll with the seas” kinda of fellow. As a fat old white guy retired injineer who’s a poor old senior citizen on a fixed income, I tend to plan a lot.

“In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” — Dwight D. Eisenhower

Always have a Plan B, Plan C, and as many others as is unreasonable. (Once I had alternatives up to the letter M and never needed any of them.)

I wonder if it is the physical act of writing or will an online journal do?

Hmmmmmmm?

I thought this was a hoot.

It just goes to show you that when folks get a scientific fact they don’t like, they can quibble until they get one they do like.

My question for these … … “interesting individuals” is would you take a transfusion from a black human being to save your life? (You could ask the same question in reverse. My answer is “hell yes” and be eternally grateful to the donor.)

Perhaps, these finding could change some hearts and minds?

Is there a “Sully Award” for the most astounding feat with an airplane?

If there is, these guys should get it. I’d like to know how they did it.

For the voice on the ground, I’m reminded of this quote.

For the past few days / weeks / eons, I’ve been getting a taste of “parenthood 101”.

I now understand why I was never “blessed” with my own.

They are too much work.

Laugh!

My blogging has been disrupted. I’ll try to do better in the future.

Laugh!

(Like anyone really cares.)

I enjoy the occasional Joe Rogan rant, because he can be very enlightening. Thankfully, his video on Happiness is short and straightforward, and surprisingly uplifting. Personally, I struggle with “[Happiness is] not having all your ducks in a row,” so this video is a good reminder.  — CD

Well, I must be “happy” then, because my “ducks” are never in a row.

INSPIRATIONAL: You Can’t Return to Eden

A Man’s Life
You Can’t Return to Eden

*** begin quote ***

Unlike in the traditional Christian interpretation of the story in which God wishes to keep Adam and Eve from the tree of knowledge indefinitely, however, in looking at it as a metaphor for maturation, the father knows that his children will eventually partake of its fruit, and he both dreads that day, and yet understands its necessity in their future happiness.

Like all parents, he wrestles with dueling impulses: on the one hand, he wants his kids to stay innocent, safe, and close to him forever; but on the other, he knows that they can’t grow or progress unless they separate from him, gain knowledge, and learn to exercise moral agency on their own. Hence his conflicting commandments: he tells Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil…but he also tells them to multiply. Some readers have felt that this latter commandment could not have been fulfilled by Adam and Eve without their first breaking the former, and thus becoming awakened to their nakedness, their sexuality — their desire for each other. Here then is a father who doesn’t want his kids to get older, but knows they must to fulfill their potential, and to follow his pattern in having children themselves. It’s a fractured feeling every parent has experienced: “Don’t grow up!” “Please grow up!”

*** end quote ***

Nor should you want to … …

Honestly, I had never heard or read about this interpretation before today.

It makes perfect sense.

Now first you have to believe in “God”, “a God”, or such. But bear in mind the early humans were seeking “Eden”.

Even the Dead Old White Guys were some form of Deists.

Not sure that I share the same starting point. But us fat old white guy injineers have to leave that to the Physicists and the Theologians.

Even Mortimer Adler, Great Books of the Western World https://prodigalnomore.wordpress.com/great-books-of-the-western-world-as-free-ebooks/, couldn’t make the “leap of faith”.

INSPIRATIONAL: All the Body Parts You Can Donate

All the Body Parts You Can Donate to a Good Cause
Beth Skwarecki Tuesday 10:00am Filed to: BODY HACKS

*** begin quote ***

Bone Marrow

Who needs it? People with leukemias and lymphomas, bone marrow diseases, and immune system disorders like SCID may need a bone marrow transplant. They can’t just use any bone marrow, either: the donor’s tissue type has to match the recipient’s. Most patients who need a transplant can’t find a family member whose tissue type is a close enough match to allow them to donate. That’s why registries are so important—maybe you are someone’s match.

Who can donate? Guidelines for who can donate bone marrow are similar to those for donating blood. In addition, you have to be a good tissue match for the person who needs bone marrow. People are most likely to match with someone else from their racial or ethnic background, so registries especially need people whose heritage is African, Latino, Native American, Asian, or mixed race. Most doctors will request a donor who is under 45 years old, since younger people’s cells make for more successful transplants.

How to donate: Sign up for the National Marrow Donor Program. As part of the registration process, you will swab your cheek and send the swab for testing. This is how they know what tissue type you are. Once you are on the registry, there’s about a 1 in 500 chance that you will end up being somebody’s marrow donor.

There are two ways you might be asked to donate. The older method is a surgery where you get a giant needle in your hip. It’s great for medical TV, but not very common anymore. These days it’s more likely that you will get five daily injections of a medication called filgrastim that causes your bone marrow to release stem cells into your blood. When you donate, a machine will spend several hours filtering those cells out of your blood. In the meantime you can watch movies and chat with friends. If you’ve been put off of donating bone marrow because you were afraid it was a huge, painful needle, don’t be.

*** end quote ***

What better way to celebrate the Christmas season?

Helping your fellow human being.

Will it hurt? Maybe. But imagine how it would be to be on the other side of it. Needing but not having a donor.

Wish I was under 45.

Maybe because Our Girl Frau Reinke passed away from an unknown blood disease makes this more impact with me.

p.s., I’m a platelet and organ donor. (Platelet donations is a two hour process where, I swear, they remove them from your butt via a handy vein. I know it comes from one’s butt because that’s the only part of me that hurts. And, no, I am NOT supine on my wallet, funny people!)

Give life.
