RANT: DELL in addition to being late; sent stuff that doesn’t fit.
Tuesday, March 27, 2007I wanted to reformat LUGGABLE’s drive to reinstall and get rid of the winrot that’s been plaguing me. Argh! So I ordered a DELL XPS drive and the external enclosure. (DELL didn’t meet my dates, expectations, or such but that’s another story.) So, last night, I got around to trying it.
Guess what?
The drive is too big for the enclosure.
Argh!
I pinged for an “return”. How much fun is that going to be.
I may never buy anything online again! Certainly not from DELL.
TECHNOLOGY: I love WordPress; just NOT the long urls
Tuesday, March 27, 2007Freeloader Reinke reporting in with a new thought. (It’s so rare I have them I just had to share it. Besides I couldn’t sleep tonight so if I’m up everyone should be up.) (I tried to put this in last time I thought of it but you closed the feedback door, I forgot about it, and the delay is all your fault.)
Long urls.
Don’t get me wrong, I love WordPress. But the urls that you produce are too long imho. I use tinyurl a lot when I blog, email, or comment. Only because the likelihood of getting one right is lowered by length. If transcription is involved, forget about it.
Here’s an illustration.

technology-an-impressive-mindmap-of-blogging-platforms/
has a length of 96 characters and resulted in the following TinyURL which has a length of 25 characters:
Now, I bet that WordPress has an underlying database there somewhere. And further I bet it has an index in there somewhere. And I’ll be that ReinkeFacesLife maps to USER#123456 and “3dscft” maps to post #1492.
Finally I’d guess that it might be possible to expose a url like http://www.wordpress.com/123456/1492 if you really wanted to.
Tell me that this is already available and I’ll be really embarrassed. I thought I read ALL the doc.
Any way, here’s my insomnia fueled idea fwiw.

Hi,
It’s not already there.
The permalink is created using the most friendly option.
It tells a real person the date / title at a glance and it also is good for search engines.
You can shorten yours though – http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/23/post-options-post-slug/

Not what I wanted to hear, but at least I didn’t overlook an option. fjohn

Blogging Platforms – Part 4 – Expanding the Mindmap
Des Walsh | March 11th 2007 – 23:18
***Begin Quote***
In this fourth third post of the Business Blogging Platforms, I want to mention first that I’ve updated the original mindmap of the series to … … …

Wow, ever feel humbled.
The most humbling experience I ever had was when I saw a Rembrandt up close and personal at the Belagio in Vegas. It was the eyes. I knew that I could never create what I was looking at. It was humbling.
I had a hint of that feeling when I wandered over Des Walsh’s “business and blogging” site. What a mindmap of blogging platforms.
Now, I’ve player around with mindmapping. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mindmapping
If you’ve never tried it, think of a NYC subwaymap. It’s a visual abstraction of everything the creator thinks you should know about a topic in one visual. You can grok http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grok a topic fully from the creator’s pov. I describe it as quickly getting up on some shoulder for a better view. Like a kid at a parade. Don’t confuse the better view for real understanding. Or, the ability to do it yourself.
SO, take a quick look at that mindmap if (1) you want a snapshot of what blogging platforms are out there; (2) you want to see a well-executed mindmap; or (3) your ego needs a little deflating. (Mine always does.)
I was impressed and that’s not easy. Now where are my colored pens?
