SURVIVAL: We can’t explain such animal behavior, but it pays to have a four leggeded companion

This dog sat in a road until a car stopped, then led man into woods to save injured human

  • Keith Johnson, 84, could not move after he fell and broke his hip. But his faithful dog Gita sat in the road until a car stopped and she led a deputy deep in the woods to help her injured human

Gita, 13-year-old rescue dog is being hailed a “true hero” for flagging help after her elderly owner fell and injured his leg in Washington state last month, Stevens County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Deputy Colton Wright was patrolling a rural wooded area in Stevens County when he spotted a dog sitting in the middle of the road. With no visible residences nearby, the officer assumed the dog had gone missing and tried to get Gita into his car so he could try to find the owner.

However, Gita firmly refused to get into the vehicle, prompting the deputy to check the surrounding areas.

Not sure how to characterize this story.  Not “heroic”; can animals be heroes?  More than “INTERESTING” or “INSPIRATIONAL”.  Maybe best as “SURVIVAL”.

We can’t explain such animal behavior.  Like when a baby animal seeks out a human to help save the mom.  Or fish entangled in a net seek out a human to save themselves or another fish.  I know that it’s unusual enough to make me wonder  —  is there something we are missing?

I’ll just take note of it when I see it and someday maybe I’ll understand it.

Perhaps, in the after life, I’ll get some resolution.

Until then, everyone should have a loyal dog as their companion.  Make it a rescue; not from a puppy farm.

RANT: Civil forfeiture needs to be abolished; only if people are convicted of a crime can their assets be taken

Old legal quirk lets police take your money with little reason, critics say

Law enforcement was able to take the money through a controversial practice called civil asset forfeiture. Advocates against the practice say it amounts to legalized government theft, at times from ordinary, innocent Americans.

*** and ***

Civil forfeiture has been effectively eliminated in only North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico and Maine, according to the Institute for Justice. But dozens of other states have tried reforming their laws. Some have elevated the standard for burden of proof that law enforcement has to have to seize property. Others have improved the transparency of their procedures, Rulli said.

A federal loophole makes it easier for law enforcement agencies across the country to evade state reforms. The federal government isn’t beholden to state laws, Rulli said, so law enforcement agencies can call federal authorities in, which will seize property and split the profits with the local agencies.

This is unConstitutional trickery that the Gooferment at all levels pulls on “We, The Sheeple”.

I find the Gooferment’s conduct immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. As well as untrustworthy.

Hopefully you do too!

Argh!

In a past work life I worked at a small newspaper where corporate insisted on paying me hourly, despite the job not being capable of being done in 40 hours.

This was several years ago, that newspaper no longer exists.

Less funny when you consider how many newspapers have disappeared.

Funny what happens when you keep decreasing the value of your product.

I used to get the paper and I truly enjoyed reading it every morning. But, it kept getting smaller and smaller, and eventually it was bought out by Gannett, the people behind USA Today. That was pretty much it for me, it just became another version of the USA Today with a thin veneer of local news.

I’m a retired IT guy. I personally have always been surprised that “newspapers” didn’t figure out and implement a micropayment system.

Imagine if you were asked for 0.0001 of something (i.e., a dollar; a bitcoin; a ruble; a yen) for an article. Not some number of dollars for a year, or month, or such.

When you get on internet scale, it’s not hard to imagine getting 50k readers each paying say a penny for an article. That translates to 500$ for that one article.

The current payment technology doesn’t pay to scale that price point.

But now, a paper could collect a fraction of a bitcoin from someone’s public key and encrypt the article so that only the person’s private key could decrypt it. At that level, it wouldn’t be worth pirating it or sharing you private key to deprive the sender of the revenue.

I think that would be the way to save the “local” paper with digital distribution of content.

FWIW YMMV

GUNS: How many women are now considering carrying some sort of self-defense? Not enough!

I’m a woman who runs alone. I’m furious about Eliza Fletcher’s killing.
Opinion by Amanda Lee Myers, USA TODAY – Yesterday 4:34 PM

Robinson said she’s now considering carrying some sort of self-defense on her runs. But she resents even having to think about it.

“I am not a violent person, I don’t own weapons, I don’t have a gun in the house,” she said. “So for me to even make a comment saying, ‘I feel like I need to carry something,’ it’s intimidating. Like, we shouldn’t have that feeling.”

Like Robinson, running has made me feel invincible at times. Strong, healthy, fearless. But one leer, one sexual comment, a threatening lunge, can take that away in a split second.

No one should have to feel like this. No one should be attacked on a run. No one should forget Eliza Fletcher and the run she couldn’t finish.

Sorry but it is a cruel hard dangerous world out there. In the wild, there are predators and prey.  Large and small.  And, for as much as the “civilized world” would like to ignore that simple fact of life, it’s inevitable.

Everyone has the RIGHT OF SELF-DEFENSE!  No matter what politicians and bureaucrats say, legislate, or enforce, EVERYONE must be prepared to defend themselves from the crazies, the lunatics, and the feral humans.  Not to forget the animal kingdom’s less threats — bear, cats, and dogs.

At the very least, every recreational runner should have a shark knife, pepper spray, and a suitable handgun.  Think of it as added “training weights”!

Then, the situation awareness to identify threats and, as necessary, eliminate them.
