A social media craze in Spain where people are encouraged to seek out prospective partners in supermarkets with the help of pineapples has led to some chaotic scenes.

In the city of Bilbao, northern Spain, police were reportedly called by workers after a flash mob of hopeful singles packed a Mercadona store and “overwhelmed” it.

The crowd quickly dispersed when officers arrived, and no one was arrested in the incident.

Singletons have been drawn to branches of the supermarket chain, where it is claimed they can find romance if they visit between 7pm and 8pm and put a pineapple upside down in their trolley.

According to surinenglish.com, Lidl has sent a message to all its customers in Spain entitled: “La hora del amor” (the hour of love).

It went on to say, “In this mass mailing, the company invites their customers who are looking for love to come between 6pm and 7pm with a watermelon in your trolley” as a sign that they are looking for a partner.

I guess this is better that meeting strangers in a bar.  But not as safe as meeting someone in church.

In my day, all the grandmothers would arrange dates for their eligible grandchildren.  Often with a chaperone.  Not as bad as that scene from the Godfather,  Laugh!

Not a bad idea to sell pineapples and watermelons.

At least four people — including a father — have died in recent months for giving in to a new and deadly TikTok trend, Alabama authorities said.

The thrill-seekers jumped or flipped off the backs of speeding boats, only to break their necks on the wake and drown, according to Cpt. Jim Dennis of the Childersburg Rescue Squad.

The high rate of speed of the boat combined with the still water make for a dangerous landing pad that feels similar to concrete.

BBC tries to understand politics by creating fake Americans

NEW YORK (AP) — Larry, a 71-year-old retired insurance broker and Donald Trump fan from Alabama, wouldn’t be likely to run into the liberal Emma, a 25-year-old graphic designer from New York City, on social media — even if they were both real.

Each is a figment of BBC reporter Marianna Spring’s imagination. She created five fake Americans and opened social media accounts for them, part of an attempt to illustrate how disinformation spreads on sites like Facebook, Twitter and TikTok despite efforts to stop it, and how that impacts American politics.

That’s also left Spring and the BBC vulnerable to charges that the project is ethically suspect in using false information to uncover false information.

“We’re doing it with very good intentions because it’s important to understand what is going on,” Spring said. In the world of disinformation, “the U.S. is the key battleground,” she said.

This is easily prevented by requiring a credit card and charging for access.  Elon’s 8$/month will do more to eliminate, or down grade bots, than can be imagined.

The fee would eliminate fakes PDQ.  Surprising that no one mentions it in the article.

Of course, there’s no way to comment on the site, because they are just interested in attracting eyeballs.
