There was an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit.

“Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.

“We’ll see,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses.

“How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed.

“We’ll see,” replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.

“We’ll see,” answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

“We’ll see,” said the farmer.

Funny but very understandable.  Wde don’t always see the good and the bad immediately.  If ever.

FUN: A Christmas tradition that I think is “priceless”

In 1981, we drew names and everyone had to go to a garage sale and buy the ugliest thing there – the kind of thing that the seller put $.25 on just so someone would think it had *some* value and wasn’t just junk.

My dad ended up being given an 18″ tall plaster bust of Queen Nefertiti from someone’s ceramics class. It was painted in light blue with a bright red jewel in her headpiece.

The next year, it was given to someone else, but we recorded with a black sharpie who it had been given to each year.

The rule is that if you receive it, you have to display it in your house in a prominent place. No sticking it in a closet.

It’s been passed down every year with few exceptions (Covid being one and a well-meaning but ill-advised prank being the other).

Somewhere along the way we started recording births and deaths on it.

CSB: My mother has threatened to smash iat several times – not because she hates it, but because she’s gotten it the least.

CSB 2: Was in a store and found several duplicates once. If I’d had the money, everyone would have gotten one.

I just thought this was a great idea!

Made me laffffff, and glad I don’t have “family” traditions.

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: You peasants may have opinions, but they matter not to your betters

https://www.boston.com/news/local-news/2024/07/11/boston-is-getting-more-speed-humps-a-lot-more/?ICID=ref_fark

Boston is getting more speed humps. A LOT more.

The humps themselves are about three inches high and about 12 to 14 feet long. Cars can smoothly travel over them at 20 miles per hour or slower.

By Molly Farrar  — July 11, 2024

*** begin quote ***

A speed hump could be coming to a street in your neighborhood soon, as the city unrolls a years-long effort to promote traffic safety.

The City of Boston will install more than 2,000 of the humps, as part of “Safety Surge,” which began in October. The City plans to have installed more than 400 humps by the end of July.

*** and ***

More humps are planned for Mission Hill and Allston-Brighton. According to the city’s website, there will be no opportunity for resident feedback, but residents will be notified before a speed hump is built on their street.

*** end quote ***

I wonder if the elite are getting speed bumps like it or not?

Somehow I suspect not.

And, I guess all the potholes have already been filled?

Yet, another example of Gooferment arrogance.

It should not be necessary though. States give casinos a license to print money. They should regulate them to force them to pay these kind of wins. If the casino wants to recoup because the machine is defective, it can deal with courts to take it out on the manufacturer. It’s bad enough their business model is already to screw over patrons, why make it easier by letting them weasel out of paying the rare jackpot? (Besides the corruption, I mean.)

Since the States regulate casinos … …

… … shouldn’t they step in a force the casino to pay off?

Why should this “winner” have to spend money to go to a Gooferment court to recover from a Gooferment regulated enterprise?

Sigh!

Crews rescue injured man trapped on hoodoo towering over Utah canyon

GRAND COUNTY, Utah — Utah search and rescue crews put their lives on the line in some of the most treacherous conditions around the state, often helping those who bite off a little more than they can chew.

Grand County Emergency Medical Services shared photos from an incredible rescue last Saturday that found a man stranded on a hoodoo towering thousands of feet in the air over the canyon below.

Subby doesn’t subscribe to the notion that someone in danger should pay for their rescue, but, of course, there are exceptions

# – # – # – # – #

A rescue crew for 3 hours costs something.  Why should “rescues” be “free” except to the Taxpayer.

Maybe there should be a sliding scale for reimbursement based on “forseeability of requiring rescue” or total cost or some other factors.

One buys travel and medical insurance in connection with a cruise.  Why not something similar for venues like the Grand Canyon, National Parks, or ski slopes?

Maybe I’m a grinch but the Taxpayers should not be the stuckee.

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: The proper response to Gooferment diktats

Friday, May 17, 2024

https://www.fark.com/vidplayer/13247440

My neighbor has a sea-faring vessel which he parks on the side of his home. A few weeks ago, he received a letter from the city stating he needed to build a new fence to hide said vessel from view of the street. After reluctantly building the fence and driveway, he presented a sassy idea to me that would require my artistic skills.

So here it is…

A painting of boat in a driveway next to a house on a fence in front of a boat in a driveway next to a house!

I love this response to a Gooferment diktat!

Argh!

ENCOURAGING: Let’s redeffine “juvenile” — from age to something more reasonable

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A juvenile accused of a year-long crime spree will stand trial as an adult.

The St. Louis County Family Court certified Juanell Carter, 17, as an adult on Thursday. He faces 53 criminal charges for allegedly breaking into dozens of cars across the region and stealing purses, credit cards, firearms, and motor vehicles.

*** end quote ***

“I told you that ‘juvenile delinquent’ is a contradiction in terms. ‘Delinquent’ means ‘failing in duty.’ But duty is an adult virtue—indeed a juvenile becomes an adult when, and only when, he acquires a knowledge of duty and embraces it as dearer than the self-love he was born with. There never was, there cannot be a ‘juvenile delinquent.’ But for every juvenile criminal there are always one or more adult delinquents—people of mature years who either do not know their duty, or who, knowing it, fail.” ― Robert A. Heinlein, Starship Troopers

Clearly, when one choses “the dark side”, society must protect itself.

This person is no longer a “child” deserving of special status.

Time to redefine our society’s paradigm on criminal responsibility.

Immediately.

Here’s the wake up call.

Repton: Rhea on the run in village shocks driver

A rhea on the run left a driver in shock after it jumped out in front of his car.

The large, flightless bird was seen running down Main Street in Repton, Derbyshire, on Sunday afternoon.

Robert Jay, a window cleaner in the village, was driving with his wife when the rhea suddenly appeared.

Mr Jay shared a video, which was filmed by his wife, on social media with the caption: “That’s the biggest chicken I’ve ever seen.”

I just found this video funny and can not imagine that I’d have thought it was chicken.

Watch Beavers Parachute From Planes in Footage From 1948
Skydiving beavers. What could possibly go wrong?
By Rebecca OConnell | Mar 25, 2024, 3:27 PM EDT

*** begin quote ***

With the help of test beaver Geronimo, Heter created a special wooden box that opened on impact. In total, 76 beavers were dropped in Chamberlain Basin, with all but one surviving. They went on to live fruitful, busy lives in their remote new home.

The story of the furry skydivers may sound too silly to be true, but there is video evidence. Fish and Game historian Sharon Clark found the forgotten footage, and thanks to the magic of the internet, we can all enjoy it today.

Well for one beaver, it didn’t work out so well.

Pretty funny to me.  Wonder what the beavers thought of it?

Russian pilot tried to shoot down an RAF surveillance plane after believing he had permission to fire, it has been claimed.

The pilot fired two missiles, the first of which missed rather than malfunctioned as claimed at the time, the BBC has reported.

Russia had said the incident last September when missiles were fired at the RAF aircraft – with a crew of up to 30 – was caused by a “technical malfunction”.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) publicly accepted the Russian explanation.
