SERVICE: ESPN3 on Verizon FIOS

Sunday, January 29, 2012

Tried to watch my alma mater on ESPN3.

(Great idea!)

But on the computer, it’s unwatchable.

Poking around, I found it was available on the IPAD with its own free app.

Downloaded the APP and, same network, it looks perfect.

Watching both side by side!

The computer side is unwatchable; the IPAD is perfect.

It appears that there is a 10 second delay between what the computer is showing and what the IPAD is.

Also, the IPAD goes quiet during the commercials. (How kool is that!)

Argh!

SOFTWARE: MARSEDIT3 is the blog content creation tool that I’m now using

MarsEdit 3
Desktop blog editing for the Mac.The best way to write, preview, and publish your blog.

Browser-based interfaces are slow, clumsy, and require you to be connected to the internet just to use them. Browsers are perfect for reading web content, but not so great for creating it.

Note: They gave a thirty day trial and it worked flawlessly. Unlike what I was using ECTO.

Soooo:

RECOMMENDED MARSEDIT3

TECHNOLOGY: APPLE’s IBOOKS2 is a paradigm and meme shift in education. And elsewhere.

Thursday, January 26, 2012

iBooks 2 brings textbooks to life (hands-on)
by Jason Parker
January 19, 2012 3:01 PM PST

*** begin quote ***

We decided to download a free preview version of E.O. Wilson’s “Life on Earth” textbook to get a feel for the features (the preview comes with only two chapters). Navigating through chapters and sections of a textbook works great on the iPad. You swipe to switch chapters, or touch sections or pages to get right into the content. We think this will be useful for students who need to jump around through chapters. Once you’re looking at a page, you also have touch options, such as a pinch, which shrinks a page, and slide, which returns it to the navigation area on the bottom of the chapter screen.

*** end quote ***

Looks like Apple hit this one out of the park.

(I’ve got to upgrade my MACBOOKAIR to try the “AUTHOR” software.)

If it’s as easy and as free as they say, it might be another even bigger revolution. Figure education, from a technology pov, hasn’t changed since Plato taught Aristotle.

This is BOTH a paradigm and meme shift.

Wonder how to extract some of the value from such a shift?

And, how does it impact medicine, engineering, and Informaton Technology?

Free AUTHOR software and easy e-publishing throws the doors open even wider than LULU did.

TECHNOLOGY: Push back against Apple, IBOOKS2, and IBOOKS2_AUTHOR

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Here’s the strike back against Apple’s IBOOKS2.

Apple had the opportunity to break the marketplace open and whiffed.

(1) It’s IOS only and doesn’t support EPUB. In fact Apple’s format is reportedly a broken form of EPUB. Like what Microsoft does, take an open format and break it by extension.

(2) It crony capitalism as Apple enlists the Big Textbooks in locking things up by DRM.

(3) The restrictions on IBOOKS2_AUTHOR are onerous and expensive for authors.

(4) I’m no fan of Gooferment diktats, but this sure looks like an illegal tie in and restraint of trade.

What it does do is to popularize the questioning of expensive text books!

With Open Courseware and Open Text Books?

Look at all the classics in the public domain. Despite bookstores, Apple, and Amazon trying to sell them. Project Guttenberg for me.

And, with the ability to “publish” ebooks and print books cheaply, it will encourage folks to “roll their own”. Lulu print volumes under 25$ a copy and the ebook versions are basically free with no restrictions. Amazon’s Create Space is cheap; although I just saw a hint they were “revising” their offering.

It’s going to collapse the market, imho.

TECHNOLOGY: Yeah, “you” stopped SOPA and the next day the Feds seized MEGAUPLOAD without a trial

Friday, January 20, 2012

Yeah, big deal.

Everyone put black on, and the politicians and bureaucrats executed a site the next day.

Bet they were just cowering in their boots at the protest.

Yeah, “afraid enough” to sput in everyone’s “eye”!

Argh!

SERVICE: AMAZON_CLOUD with the IPAD partially broken by design

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200689200

Getting Started: MP3 Store and Cloud Player for Web on iPad

Frequently Asked Questions

The Amazon MP3 Store on iPad lets you shop one of the world’s largest DRM-free (digital rights management free) digital music stores and save your purchases for free to Amazon’s online storage service, Amazon Cloud Drive. Purchases stored in Amazon Cloud Drive are available for playback from any iPad, Mac, PC, or Android device and available for download from any Mac, PC, or Android device using the free web browser-based application Amazon Cloud Player.

# – # – #

OK, first time I’ve “found” a significant flaw in the AMAZON_CLOUD with the IPAD.

You can play your music, BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), you can’t copy it TO the IPAD.

That means you have to be connected to the INET and play YOUR music, that you’ve bought, with their application.

Argh!

The quest is now on for a work around.

# – # – # – # – #

No easy workaround.

(yet)

Why if I buy the song from APPLE_ITUNES does it get downloaded to the IPAD’s version, but if I buy it from AMAZON it can’t be?

Restraint of trade by technology?

# – # – # – # – #

Well it’s there. BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), you have to go thru ITUNES to get it to the IPAD. The downside is that it makes extra copies on the desktop in ITUNES.

Argh!

CardScan @ Your Service Discontinuance Update

Dear DYMO Customer,

As you know, CardScan At Your Service was discontinued at the end of the December. At the request of current AYS users,  we have begun working with a 3rd party software provider that may be able to offer you a similar service to store your contacts. With the new provider, you may able to synchronize your contacts from your local CardScan application with their cloud application.

Additional details about the new provider will be distributed in the coming weeks, however we wanted to make you aware of this offering as soon as administratively possible.

We would like to thank you again for being a valued CardScan user.

Sincerely,

The DYMO team

DYMO, a member of the Newell Rubbermaid family of brands.

And, why would I care what you want to do for me? Like I’d trust anyone that you’d recommend. I bought your product (a desktop card scanner) which included your “eternal” update service. First you downgraded the service to eliminate the update. Then you left me high dry. Now you want to “save” me. Argh! Guess what I’d never buy your product or anything with the “Rubbermaid” brand again. Fool me once. I suspect the only reason your doing this is to make a few bucks off the data. Argh!

TECHNOLOGY: LIFELOCK teaches care in the use secondary passwords for primary password reset

Friday, January 13, 2012

http://www.lifelock.com/identity-theft/types/

How Identities Are Stolen
When it comes to identity theft, the first step in protecting yourself is learning what thieves are doing to steal your personal information.

# – # – #

Interesting that LIFELOCK doesn’t have their commercials on their websites. GODADDY, boo hisss sopa-lover, integrates their hyper-sex commercials with their website (i.e., the TV commercial points to the X-rated version and the website has both the TV version and the “X-rated one. I’d dispute the X rating. Yeah, they sucked the lecherous me to watch. I, of course, did it from a technology and moral arbiter pov. Just so you didn’t have to endure it.) LIFELOCK misses the opportunity to reinforce their message.

MORE interesting, is that LIFELOCK’s TV commercial points out the flaw in what I’ll call secondary authentication and what the banks call “easy password recovery”. Argh! Those “password reset” questions are really passwords controlling the reset function. Mother’s Maiden Name, Date of Birth, Pet’s Name.

ARGH!

Absolute stupidity.

I know why the banks and others do it. They don’t want the expense of fielding a telephone call for a password reset. (When I was at CSFB, I figured each one cost “me” 45$. I figured a clever way to “solve” that problem at ZERO cost. Hire me and I’ll share it.)

So, how does the average User defend themselves?

(1) Never ever use these resets for the named purpose? For examples, “Mother’s Maiden Name” for me might be “TAYLOR_SWIFT”; DOB for me is 10/19/62 (Cuban Missile Crisis); Pet’s name is “58#ae#MK#Es#82”. All carefully captured on paper.

(2) Use a tool like LASTPASS, KEYPASS, or 1PASSWORD for NON-FINANCIAL uses.

(3) Use real passwords that you memorize or write down in your calendar or note book for FINANCIAL sites.

(4) Always insist that FINANCIAL institutions or SERVICE PROVIDERS send you a paper bill. Upon receipt, take the statement and review it. Initial EVERY page.

(5) Never permit any one or any thing to have direct access to your financial accounts. (Made that mistake once.)
