LUGGABLE BSOD — no outlook
Monday, June 16, 2008It failed so fast. I saw the BSOD, but couldn’t see the codes. Rebooted. Lost 10 minutes on my story. Argh!

McBookaire: Last night’s work lost
Thursday, June 12, 2008Argh!
All the work on chapter 63 was lost.
I don’t know if it was McBa’s fault or operator error.
I have to print everything I do on this project before I leave a file. Luggable has screwed me once very badly on this project loosing three wee hours of the morning prose. Now McBa screwed me out of an hour of not so beautiful prose.
Argh! Argh!
Maybe I should use a typewriter? This is a productivity enhancement?
Argh! Argh! Argh!

McBookaire: McBa saves my chapter? Oh yeah!
Thursday, June 12, 2008Argh!
Sent a chapter of the novel over to McBa. Worked fine. Did some work no it saved it. And this morning McBa says something to the effect that “you might be surprised at the results”.
Aghhh!
Surprised is NOT the word I’d use.

Today, when driving to get gas, I saw a family walking to the bus and that reminded me of commuting to NYC with my aunt; I loved the cold ac of the bus on the hot humid mornings.

McBookaire: It’s BACKSPACE; not DELETE
Sunday, June 8, 2008Now maybe it’s picky. And maybe I’m just dense. But the McBa’s keyboard is mislabeled one key.
It’s <backspace>; not <delete>!!!
It reallly throws me off.
Maybe there’s a way to redefine it? Maybe I just don’t understand. Maybe it’s trivial to you.
It’s annoying to me!

Update: Yes, I figured out that Fn + Delete is ‘forward delete’. Thanks, Google. Argh!

Free iPod Touch with Purchase of a Mac for College Students?

TECH HARDWARE: Strange event
Friday, May 30, 2008This morning luggable was rebooted.
No reason apparent to me.
Did Microsoft push one of their mandatory take fixes? Was it related to Comcast’s problems yesterday? Have I been hacked?
Who knows?

I am leaving Microsoft. But before I go, I have my latest novel at chapter 56 of 100. Can’t leave before that’s done.
(I don’t think!?!)
Anyway, I email my doc after every major session. Now it’s hung up. I can’t email it and can’t get away from the screen to email it.
Argh!
I get ‘unspecified error’ and I can’t find anything online about getting out of it.

McBookaire: Field experiment with McBa
Tuesday, May 27, 2008I ordered a ‘man bag’ for McBa. (Mac Book Air … I’m always accused of using acronyms) I took the 35$ one that looked like it would suffice. Some of them are price in the hundreds. Guess they think if you spring for a McBa, then you’ll spend any amount for anything. Maybe Martha; not me. The dumb thing didn’t come with a shoulder strap so I borrowed one. I’ll gripe about that vendor when I get around to it.
Any way I took McBa out in its ‘man bag’ and it worked perfectly. Fired up the vwubbie (Verizon Wireless Broad Band usb modem). And everything worked fine.
There was a wifi signal but I couldn’t connect. Argh!
McBa ran for more than 2 hours on the battery driving vwubbie.
I as careful to shut down; not just close the lid. Just closing the lid drains the battery in 12 hours.
So far, I’m pleased.

TECH SOFTWARE: “licensed, not sold” “barbara streisand”
Saturday, May 24, 2008Court smacks Autodesk, affirms right to sell used software
By Timothy B. Lee | Published: May 23, 2008 – 12:21PM CT
***Begin Quote***
If Jones’s ruling is upheld on appeal, it will have important consequences for the software industry, where the legal fiction that software is merely licensed is widely employed. In addition to discouraging the market for used software, software firms have also attempted to use the “licensed, not sold” theory to enforce restrictions on reverse engineering that would otherwise be fair use under copyright law. If software is sold, rather than licensed, then no license is required to install and use the software, and the terms of shrink-wrap licenses may not be legally binding.
The Autodesk case is not the only case regarding the first sale doctrine working its way through the courts. Another lawsuit filed last summer concerns another eBay seller who sells used promo CDs. Like Vernor, the plaintiff in that case faced repeated DMCA takedown notices and sued to vindicate his right to sell used merchandise online. EFF is representing the plaintiff in that case, and McSherry tells Ars that while there are important differences between the cases, the opinion bodes well for EFF’s case because “it affirms that copyright owners can’t use license restrictions to strip away first sale rights.”

About time this fictional non-sense was brought to a halt.
This will be a boon, and boom to software developers and users in general.

LINKEDIN: LinkedIn continues to demonstrate it’s ‘tin ear’
Friday, May 23, 2008Another LION: Linkedin’s Ignorance Of Networking + Keep STRONG!
By WrightHandBlogger
*** begin quote ***
So, imagine my surprise when Linkedin Corporation wrote to me today telling me that they’d suspended my group called “Keep STRONG!” – ostensibly for this well-worn-out old Linkedin reason: “The LinkedIn Groups feature is meant for like-minded peers who have a similar base of professional experience. Group members should have some structured
off-line association with other professionals. We do not feel your group goes with bringing like minded professionals together in the LinkedIn manner. We have suspended this group at this time.”
Here is the group description I wrote for the group “Keep STRONG!”: “It is NOT your job to help those who seek to drag you down, to weaken you. That’s their job. Your job is to acquire as much encouragement as is needed for you to have a healthy life. YOUR job is to Keep STRONG!!”
{Extraneous Deleted}
Thanks,
Vincent Wright

LinkedIn continues to demonstrate it’s ‘tin ear’ to it’s champions. They better hope the next better idea doesn’t come along until after they cash out.

Google makes public service that gives consumers electronic medical record access
***Begin Quote***
NEW YORK (AP) — Google’s online filing cabinet for medical records opened to the public Monday, giving users instant electronic access to their health histories while reigniting privacy concerns.
Called Google Health, the service lets users link information from a handful of pharmacies and care providers, including Quest Diagnostics labs. Google plans to add more.
***End Quote***
Well, I’m singularly unimpressed. I signed up. Figured it would be good to track Frau Reinke’s medical exploits. It’s dumb. And a giant waste of time.
Unless they have more they are not showing, it’s a waste of electrons. Never mind privacy. It doesn’t even get into the batter’s box.

Sunday, May 18, 2008Well, BLOGDESK doesn’t allow me to tag my Jasper Jottings posts with class year. I’d have to go into the blog on WordPress to add them. That’s too much like work. Soooo, maybe there’s a better tool?

WINXP: Lugable takes a holiday
Sunday, May 4, 2008Thursday night, actually Friday wee hours, I couldn’t sleep; so I pounded out several reams of my best prose. It tired me out so I went back to bed. All happy and ready to sleep.
Friday 6AM, I close the lid and go to work. Like I’ve done for what feels like eons. I open up at work and screens black. No power. SO I power up and pouf the data fairy has taken that stuff and sent it to the bit bucket.
I wriggled on that hook for the day. Off and on. It was gone.
Mozy has been spinning cycles but it’s crap.
So I’m screwed … again. BY microsoft’s ‘productivity’ software.
If I ever buy another microdots product, kick me.

LINKEDIN: Old messages appear ‘gone’
Friday, April 25, 2008I’m a paying customer of LinkedIn. (Not that that seems to matter much.)
I send a few emails to folks from time to time in support of their jobsearch efforts. (Offer help, cite some resources, give a few urls, and wish them bona fortuna.) I used to just call up an old one and steal the usual passages. Then, customize a little and shoot it off. LinkedIn doesn’t offer drafts or templates.
When I went to do that, (I guess for the first time since the redesign.) SHAZAAM, there not where they used to be.
Maybe they’ve just moved?
I read the LinkedIn faqs and it looks like they went to the bit bucket.
Argh!!
Copying an email to yourself isn’t even a future workaround because the email is kept in the LinkedIn playpen.
Sooo, ti seems like you have to cut and paste an email to yourself to compensate.
Arghh!
So I shot this off to “Customer Service”: (BY THE WAY, did anyone notice that ‘customer service’ is now a new and different domain from LinkedIn? That is ‘linkedin.custhelp.com’! Outsourced to a vendor in India maybe?)
*** begin quote ***
I used to be able to see my old messages that I wrote, received archived, invitations and such. Since the redesign, I can’t find any of that. Are they now gone?
It would have been nice to give a ‘head’s up’. So I could have saved them. As a paying customer, I don’t expect surprises. If I was a freeloader, I’d have less of a squawk.
*** end quote ***
Upon submitting, you have to put in contact information? Interesting. This leads credence to the ‘outsourced customer service’ impression. Why would they need that input again?
Argh!

McBookaire: Time Machine fun
Wednesday, April 23, 2008Fired up the Time machine.
It REQUIRES an inet connection to configure. Or at least I couldn’t figure out how to make it work without one.
It’s backing up MBA as we speak. Feels like about four hours.
Haven’t figured out where to keep the Time Machine — home or at work?
Haven’t figured out how to eject the disk from the ‘MacBookAir Super Drive’ (an external cd drive with a twenty page limited warranty in five languages AND a four page ‘user manual’ with one page of pictures and two pages of ‘regulatory information’ and one sentence of documentation)
“Attach the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to your MacBook Air.” in five languages of course.
No word how to eject the disk, the drive, or the usb cable. (I’ll wait till I power down.) No idea if you can put it on a usb hub between it and MBA!

MCBookAire: Enterprise WEP Leap? Not easy
Tuesday, April 8, 2008Well after two days of playing with McBa at work, I haven’t been able to get it to connect to the corporate LAN. (It is permitted security policy wise!) But, if the McBookAir supports Enterprise WEP with LEAP, it’s not obvious to me.
