Louisiana Nurse Wins State Supreme Court Battle in Plan B Conscience Case

Baton Rouge, LA (LifeNews.com) — A Louisiana nurse won her battle at the state Supreme Court last Friday when it refused to hear a hospital’s appeal of a lower court decision siding with her. The nurse, Toni Lemly, sued St. Tammany Parish Hospital in 2005 after it refused to grant a reasonable accommodation for her religious beliefs.

See this is where it gets confusing to me.

The hospital is the gooferment for all intents and purposes.

The Constitution says we have religious freedom.

So now we taxpayers have to pay for when the gooferment doesn’t follow its own rules.

And, exactly how does this punish anyone but the taxpayer?

Can I get off this delusional merry go round? It’s making me sick.

New at Reason: Cathy Young on Why Single Motherhood is on the Rise
May 21, 2009, 3:00pm

*** begin quote ***

A new report from the National Center for Health Statistics with the dry title, “Changing Patterns of Nonmarital Childbearing in the United States,” contains startling news: births to single mothers, which had leveled off in the early 2000s, have risen sharply in recent years. Some sociologists believe we have reached a tipping point: the link between marriage and parenthood is no longer the norm. Why is this happening, and what does it mean for women, children, and men? There are no simple answers, writes Contributing Editor Cathy Young, only difficult questions that we ignore at our peril.

*** end quote ***

(1) Families ensured that children were nurtured.

(2) Positive male role models keep young boys in check and reassure young girls that they are valued.

(3) Intergenerational care was assured.

Bailed-Out Bank Tries Golden Parachute Loophole

*** begin quote ***

The agreement anticipates that the arrangement might not fly with government officials. According to the agreement [3] (see Page 6), if the Treasury Department or the bank’s regulators determine that it breaks the ban on golden parachutes, the bank will try to work something out – either by tempering the agreement to conform to compensation restrictions or getting a waiver to break them. If that doesn’t work, the agreement says Ms. Binder will just have to wait until the restrictions are changed or the bank pays back the TARP funds. Then she’ll get her money in a lump sum.

Well, we know that the scientists tend to by myopic and not realize how exploit their findings. Or they don’t realize how to turn them into something practical. Or give practical advice. AND, , don’t limit themselves to the fields of expertise. Like Hollywood stars, they tend to dispense ECONOMIC or POLITICAL advice that has nothing to do with their expertise. Like a foot doctor giving advice on eye. He definitely has more data – information – knowledge – wisdom than a non-doctor. BUT, (there is always a big butt), it is not his FIELD of EXPERTISE. My illustration is a doctor tells us about the problems in healthcare and then makes the leap that we should have government healthcare. HE goes from medical expertise to economic prescriptions. A recitation of facts (which may well me indisputable) to urging socialism, which we know doesn’t work. ANd, the urging is done with the same air of authority. See us injineers know about boundry conditions. So to with “global something”, climatologists should halt at the boundry of their DIKW and let others pick up at theirs. A historian might point out that that climatologists had been scaring everyone about “global cooling” two decades ago. Hence their “facts” may need some checking. And, wasn’t there a warming in the Middle Ages where Iceland had farming? Some how that seems to have been omitted from the data. Guess it just was an oversight? Or, perhaps, like a student with a lab report on deadline, it was just “an inconvenient truth”?

But, then I’m just a fowg injineer.

Climb
Conservatives must have the courage to defend their convictions.
By Mark Steyn
Is conservatism over?

*** begin quote ***

It’s a mountain, and it’s getting steeper. Promises of “free” government health care will make more voters susceptible to the blandishments of the nanny state. The Democrats have plans for talk radio and the Internet that will diminish conservative voices. Another retirement on the Supreme Court, and the First and Second Amendments will start getting nibbled away. Obama’s buddies at ACORN, already under investigation in multiple states over fraudulent voter registration, will have a prominent say in the 2010 census.

But, when the going gets tough, you don’t, as General Powell advises, “move toward the center.” You move the center toward you, as Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher did. It’s harder to do it that way, but if it’s a choice between more government and more taxes, or more liberty and more opportunity, I’ll stick with the latter, and so should the Republican party — however difficult it is. Unlike Colin Powell, conservatism does do mountains.

*** end quote ***

Anyone, who is even thinking of being fooled by Obama / Hillary Healthcare, shoudl consider:

(1) We have a working model — the VA healthcare system. Ask any vet!

(2) Will the politicians be using it? Probably not!

(3) Where is the money coming for this? Remember in every college economics class, medical care is used as an example of an “inelastic” demand curve, infinite demand without regard to cost. If medical care is “free”, demand will be “infinite”. So there will be rationing and waiting. Look at England where old people don’t get dialysis. Look at Canada, the wait for an MRI allows cancer to be fatal. (Reminds of the VA where vets are convinced their VA docs want to kill them to reduce the demand!)

(4) Forget privacy. THe government will know everything,

Name one thing that the government does acceptably?

How stupid are we?

In short, the president’s program aggravates every existing problem in the American economy, and will make genuine recovery all the longer in coming. We were already on that path before his election. Only if President Obama genuinely changes course, and allows the free economy to restore the prosperity that so much previous intervention served to undermine, would we really have change we can believe in.

I have to get some time to check snopes for this. It sounds like inet tripe. But, it does give me “blo-der” (i.e., fodder to blog about)!

Update: It is a hoax.

But it’s still useful to destroy each bullet point.

>(1) English is the official language

We need an “official” anything, like we need a hole in the head. We managed to go 200 years without an “official” language. Why do we suddenly need one now? Could it be more of the 1850’s Know Nothings anti-immigrant prejudice? Could it be just one more way that the “power elite” distract us from the important issues of the day?

>2) We will immediately go into a two year isolationist posture to straighten out the country’s attitude.. NO imports, no exports.

And, how do you like 30$/gal gasoline? Give the politicians who passed the Smoot Hawley tariff, they may have not been aware that they were creating the Great Depression and allowing FDR to take us off the gold standard which allowed runaway gooferment spending. It’s hard to imagine anything this stupid actually passing. But, never underestimate the stupidity or cupidity of politicians. In the Depression and subsequent civil unrest, you would at least wrest the title of the “great depression” from 1929. I can’t imagine the result of this ill considered policy. Not only would you screw this country, but all of our trading partner as well. Poor people in third world countries who make stuff that gets shipped here would be instantly out of work. I can visualize the starvation and civil unrest around the world. Trade preempts invasions. World War 3! Absolute stupidity.

Stay tuned. I’ll take on each over the next twelve days

>3) When imports are allowed, there will be a 100% import tax on it.

How absurd. What that means is that people will be paying the government for the privilege of overpaying? From an economic point of view, you’re not producing the maximum value for human society or American society. This is similar to the argument that every one should be a subsistence farmer. We don’t want imports from California to prevent New Jersey from growing oranges. Oh yeah, that’s right, they won’t grow here. Stupidity!

>4) All retired military personnel will be required to man one of our many observation towers on the southern border (six month tour).

Why would they have to do that. Just because they are retired military? Do they get paid? How much will that cost?

>4 continued They will be under strict orders not to fire on SOUTHBOUND aliens.

The implication is that they will fire on NORTHbound aliens. Guess all aliens look a like. The death penalty for believing what is written on the Statue of Liberty.THe problem isn’t folks coming here to work hard. The problem is government welfare and the psuedo drug war. Milltown, NJ (LifeNews.com) — A New Jersey Catholic church has replaced the large pro-life signs that adorn a grassy area in front of the church building. How Character Corrodes

*** begin quote ***

As Mr. Obama said in his news conference, it is in moments of crisis that a country must cleave to its principles. Asserting that “waterboarding violates our ideals,” he said he had been struck by an article describing how Churchill would not torture prisoners even when “London was being bombed to smithereens.”

*** end quote ***

A high school buddy pointed out this link with words that indicated his approval.

I could only shake my head.

Obama’s reference to Churchill was mistaken at best, or perhaps ignorant, and might even have been carefully constructed to mislead.

First, Churchill is NOT held in high regard by the Obama’s. See Michelle’s comments about Churchill and the British treatment of the African natives. So clearly, there is something going on here.

Second, Churchill is an icon of the Republicans. (Even though we KNOW there is no difference between D’s and R’s to those who love our liberty.) Most associated with the Iron Lady Thatcher or Ronald Regan. So, perhaps the D’s are trying to “steal” the icons while the R’s aren’t looking.

Third, and finally, the Churchill as an exemplar of how to treat prisoners is destroyed by three letters. Ready? IRA. Remember cordless drills and the phrase “knee capping”. The Tans. And, the civil repression.

So, not only is Ms. Dowd, again off base. (What does what expect from the NYT? It’s after all the “house organ” of the Obama administration and the liberal wing of the Democratic Party.

My school chum regretted the Bush and how we left the American legacy. I’d merely point out that Bush is just one in a long line of Presidents destroying our liberty and the paper Constitution. It started with Lincoln’s War of Norther Aggression, with stops at Mister Wilson’s War, the creation of the FED, and FDR’s taking us off the gold standard. Kennedy enlarging the VietNam war, Johnson’s atrocity, Nixon’s Watergate, Regan’s Drug Wars, Bush’s “No New Taxes”, Clinton’s asprin bombings and Osama failure, Bush in Iraqi.

Lest my chum think it’s going to be any different for Obama, in 100 days, he’s committed us to lifetime and legacy of debt! In his spare time, he’s started us down the road to Fascism with his actions with Government Motors and Chysler. Think Amtrak?

So we have been on the road to perdition for a long time. And, Ms. Dowd’s article doesn’t do anything to change the course.

*** end quote ***

Interesting.
Jay filled in on a NYC show once upon a time. I thought he was a reasoned voice.
As usual, this one, and many others on the radio, have missed the problem.
The problem is NOT poor people crossing the border for a better life.
(Is that what the Statue of Liberty proclaims? The phrase “huddled masses yearning to be free” comes to mind. Maybe we SHOULD put that proverbial garbage bag over the Lady with the Lamp? We obviously don’t believe in the ethic that she represents. Any more! At one time Americans did. But not now!)
The problem is welfare!
Americans have gotten fat and lazy! On welfare.
Cut out the welfare and you cut out one of the problems. Only folks who want to work hard, assimilate, and make a good life for themselves will come.
We also need to address the psuedo “war on (some) drugs”. If we decriminalize ALL drugs, then the Columbian Drug Gangs and the various gangs — including large segments of the gang euphemistically called “the police” will have to find other productive work. The Pharmacy Department at WalMart will be hiring. Instead of shoot outs over territory and children taking rat poison when they get high, we will focus our attention on curing sick people. If they want to be cured.
Yes, America and Americans have to change. Adapt to the new realities.
Immigrants in the pre-welfare state days had hard lives. But everyone was better off for it.
As Heinlein wrote: “TANSTAFL”!
“There ain’t no such thing as free lunch!”
So let’s stop bitching and get to work solving real problems!

Pelosi Wall Street Probe Follows Pecora After Crash (Update1)
By Mark Pittman and Laura Litvan

*** begin quote ***

April 21 (Bloomberg) — Wall Street may be heading for the deepest investigation of its practices since a congressional panel’s probe of abuses following the 1929 stock market crash.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to push for a comprehensive inquiry, saying that three-quarters of Americans want to know what led to the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and the collapse of Bear Stearns Cos. and Merrill Lynch & Co. She favors one patterned after Senate Banking Committee hearings led by Ferdinand Pecora starting in 1933, according to her spokesman, Nadeam Elshami.

And who investigates Congress?

Because, imho, “their fingerprints” are all over this mess — Dodd, Franks, Pelosi, and Reid!

Bush doesn’t escape clean, but they did block him.

The SEC, FTC, FDIC, and the Justice Department could have “blown the whistle”.

There’s enough blame to go around, but Pelosi is seeking to once again divert attention from her own troubles and that of her fellow congress critters.

Landlord harasses murder victim’s mother for early termination fees because her son was killed before his lease ran out

Posted by Cory Doctorow, April 26, 2009 7:11 AM

*** begin quote ***

Danelle Eckert, the mother of Colin Byars, a 24-year-old teacher who died after being punched in the head, is being harassed by Colin’s former landlord, who wants to impose an “early termination” fee on her because her son died before his lease ran out.

The landlord is CCRT Properties in Brookfield, WI.

She said the apartment’s property manager told her that they knew Byars had been killed. But the woman told Eckert the management company had been advised by their legal representative that they should go after the rent and fees.

“I said you might be able to do this, but should you do this?” Eckert said. The early termination fee makes her especially angry. “How was my son supposed to know he was going to be killed?” she asked.

RANT: The real asto turf was the anti-war movement opposing Bush!

April 20, 2009 Issue
The American Conservative
Peace Out
With Obama in office, liberals learn to love war.
By Justin Raimondo

*** begin quote ***

The antiwar rally at the University of Iowa was sparsely attended. The below 30 degree weather might have had something to do with it, but Paul Street, a local writer and one of the speakers, had another theory, as the Daily Iowan reported:

Before the crowd of fewer than 20, Street questioned why the ‘left’ locals and university officials aren’t doing more to help in the protests against the war. ‘The big truth right now, whether this town’s missing-in-action progressives get it or not, is that we need to fight the rich, not their wars,’ he said, citing big corporations for wasting their technology and funding on war.

The big truth is that the antiwar movement has largely collapsed in the face of Barack Obama’s victory: the massive antiwar marches that were a feature of the Bush years are a thing of the past. Those ostensibly antiwar organizations that did so much to agitate against the Iraq War have now fallen into line behind their commander in chief and are simply awaiting orders.

*** end quote ***

So, we now have DEMONSTRATED evidence that all the supposedly anti-war zealots were merely the liberal Democrats campaigning for their guy.

In this blog and on boards everywhere, I was pounded for saying that Ron Paul was the only true anti-war candidate.

All us little L libertarians are truly anti-war. Anti-aggression. Not defenseless! But pragmatic. MYOB and live and let live.

Maybe Justing is correct and Af-Pak will be Obama’s VietNam.

(Notice how the mainstream media has stopped reporting casualties. As an old vet, I watch good young men and women pour their life’s blood out for this mistake. Liek the other mistakes. How many have to die before the fathers and mothers in this country stand up and say “NO!”. Ron Paul would have done that.)

It just makes me sad!

And, mad!

Matt Welch | April 14, 2009, 10:22am

*** begin quote ***

When congressional Democrats in February singled out Washington, D.C.’s school voucher program as just about the only federal initiative not worth funding as part of a $410 billion spendapalooza, some Democratic apologists were all, yeah that’s bad, but technically they’re continuing the program for one more school year, then requiring congressional reauthorization at that time, etc.

Hey, Obama’s kids are getting a good education!

Remember Walter William’s quote?

“The primary victims of Philadelphia’s public schools are black students whose chances for upward mobility are being systematically destroyed by callous politicians and teacher’s unions. If the Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan set out to destroy black academic excellence in Philadelphia, I doubt whether he could achieve as much damage.” Walter Williams, Jewish World Review, Dec. 19, 2001, “Education fraud in Philly”

This is no surprise. When will the sheep wake up?

RANT: Hate Microsoft’s automtic fix and reboot

Friday, April 17, 2009

Argh! Found Frau’s machine automagically rebooted to apply “fixes”. And, lost some of what was onscreen at the time.

Imagine if GE could turn off your refridge any time it wanted to apply “fixes”. Argh!

MY RESPONSE:

“Plastic pitchforks”?

I don’t think so. Admittedly I don’t know. It too could be another gigantic conspiracy.

But, I think not. For the first time in American history, the current generation in power is seeing — a lower standard of living for the next one, a dumbing down of “graduates”, and a net loss in their savings and earning power.

It makes me mad. It makes them mad. And, it scares the dickens out of everyone.

The political class, instead of providing leadership, has run around like chicken little spending money we don’t have to feather their own nests, reward their friends, and punish their enemies. Once again, the rich and powerful had their losses made good from the public treasury. Little people lost their 401ks and became the butt of late night comedian jokes about 201ks. At least, they noticed.

And don’t forget employment. We’ve gone from the 50’s America where it was possible for a high school student to earn a living wage on one salary to now, where to wage earners is barely enough to pay the taxes and stay solvent. Never mind live comfortably.

Astroturf?

I don’t think so.

And, it flows back into huge gooferments that suck up money like a vacuum cleaner. With bureaucrats that whine about 5 and 10% annual raises, lifetime health care, and artificially fattened pensions for their “lifetime” of “service”.

I think the “tea parties” are the undercurrent of political unrest that will make VietNam look like a walk in the park.

imho, but then I’m just one of those extremist vet that Nepaolitano and our version of the SS — Homeland Security — is watching out for. Got news for them, they could see a problem until it bites US in the A double Q!

Representation without Taxation
By Alan Aronoff

*** begin quote ***

When beneficiaries of government policy do not sufficiently overlap the payers of those benefits, we have a governing system of representation without taxation. This type of system is not sustainable long term, but history suggests it may persist for some time under the pretext of ‘economic justice’ unless soundly rejected by the American people.

That’s the result of “progressive” taxation aka “soak the rich”.

The only fair tax is to make it voluntary. If the gooferment provides a service, then it should “tin cup” for donations.

At the very least, if EVERYONE had to pay a 1% tariff on imported goods. That would be “fair”.

As I proposed in page 616 of my book “CHURCH 10●19●62” (http://www.itstartedinchurch.com), a simple modest tariff collection mechanism would require little enforcement:

“Because the Government didn’t want to have a lot of checkers, the value is declared at the border. The tariff is two MILs per 10 ounces of value. The importer declares the value and pays the tariff. To ensure honesty, under estimation triggers a 100% penalty. So because the rate is so low and the penalty so high, importers typically add a zero to the end of the value number. For example, a truck valued of one thousand ounces would be assessed a tax of two ounces. So an importer, to be sure of compliance, would call it ten thousand ounces and pay a tax of twenty ounces. Not very fair, but very easy to administrate.”

We have reached the point where the “takers” outnumber the “producers”. We’ll we now see the diminished incentives lead to decreased productivity. Eventually it winds up that we look like a Communist country where the underground economy and “just getting by” becomes the national ethic.

Where are the pitchfork and torches?
