HEALTH: Nutritions role in reducing suffering and needless death

Physicians May Be Missing their Most Important Tool
Michael Greger M.D. FACLM June 1st, 2015 Volume 24

*** begin quote ***

Yes, there’s still much to learn about the optimal diet, but we don’t need a single study more to take nutrition education seriously—immediately. It is the low-hanging fruit of health care. We have had the knowledge we need for some time; what we need now is the will to put it into practice. By emphasizing the powerful role of nutrition, we could dramatically reduce suffering and needless death.

*** end quote ***

All by eating a plant-based diet?

Seems too simple but you can’t argue with the evidence.

Yeah, it requires retraining our tastes and our brain (i.e., memes), but look at what it avoids: heart attack, strokes, and type 2 diabetes.

I’m “trying”. Oh, how I hate that word. “NO! … Try not! … Do or do not… there is no try.” (To do it justice, you must say the word try with all the revulsion and disgust you can put on it. Like you were talking about a rapist, a child murderer, or a politician!) — Yoda (Fictional character from George Lucas’s “Star Wars” movie)

“Try” to save your own life and extend your useful years.

But, like smoking, it’s hard to change the paradigms and memes of a lifetime.

But you and I have to “try”.

15,000 Steps Is the New 10,000

We’ve all heard the “walk 10,000 steps a day to be healthy” pitch, but new research says that, while 10,000 is better than nothing, it might not quite be enough.

The study, published in the International Journal of Obesity, looked at postal workers in Glasgow, Scotland, including office workers and carriers who primarily deliver mail by foot. Each participant wore an activity tracker and had their body mass index, waist size, blood sugar level, and cholesterol profile measured throughout the study. All of which, of course, are risk factors for heart disease.

Unsurprisingly, those who sat most of the day had higher BMIs, larger waistlines, poor blood sugar control, and less than ideal cholesterol profiles when compared to those who moved around more. In fact, for every hour of sitting during the day beyond five hours, participants had a .2% increased likelihood of developing heart disease in their lifetime based on the researchers’ model.

But those who walked a lot throughout each day were the picture of health. Workers who walked 15,000 steps or more each day (which is roughly seven miles), or were standing upright for seven hours or more, had normal BMIs, average waistlines, and had no features of metabolic syndrome. Overall, their risk of heart disease was very low when compared to those who walked fewer than 15,000 steps, assuming they weren’t already at high risk for hereditary reasons. This research suggests that our current estimate of 10,000 steps per day may be too conservative, and that 15,000 steps is the mark we should be aiming for if we want to stave off life-threatening cardiac conditions.

Argh!

I haven’t gotten to 10k on any kind of consistent basis. Let alone 15 or 21!

Argh!

Argh!

So I guess I have to rethink my commitment to steal back all my social security losses due to their Ponzi theft. By my rough calculation, I probably have to life to 120 to steal it back. 240, if you add in the Time Value Of Money. Argh!

So I better get moving.

Just like most doctors smoked in the 1950s, most physicians today continue to consume foods that are contributing to our epidemics of dietary disease.

Strong words for good advice.

But it does require all us autodydactics to reprogram our eating habits.

As hard as that is, we should take that doc’s quote: “I don’t mind dying, I just don’t want it to be my fault.”  — Michael Greger M.D. FACLM  March 10th, 2017

Many a true word is said in a joke.

So sad that patients have to die because of their doctors’ stupidity, ignorance, and (I hope not) avarice.

Of course, the Gooferment has a big role in this continuing stupidity.

HEALTH: Smallpox And Columbian Exchange

Smallpox And Columbian Exchange

*** begin quote ***

Smallpox can be spread by bodily fluids or objects that have been contaminated. To date, it is the only disease that has been eradicated.

In the 1500s, during the Columbian Exchange between Europe and the New World, smallpox devastated Native inhabitants, killing up to 90 percent of the population. This disease was also used as a method for biological warfare by European explorers who were colonizing the Americas. Native populations had no built up immunity to the diseases that Europeans brought over and were torn apart by the virus. Entire civilizations were wiped out, taking with them cultures, forms of art, and languages that are now lost forever.

I focused on the “only disease that has been eradicated”.

That’s an interesting assertion.

What about polio?

Benefits of Nuts for Stroke Prevention
Written by: Michael Greger M.D. FACLM on January 10th, 2017

*** begin quote ***

In the PREDIMED study, from the Spanish “PREvencio ́n con DIeta MEDiterranea,” a whopping 7,447 patients were randomized into three groups. These were folks at high risk for a heart attack, about half were obese, diabetic and most had high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but they had not yet had their first heart attack or stroke. A third were told to eat a Mediterranean diet and given a free quart of extra virgin olive oil every week. The second group were told to eat a Mediterranean diet and given a half pound of free nuts every week, and the last third were told to follow the American Heart Association guidelines and reduce their fat intake. No portion control or exercise advice was given, and they were followed for about five years. The results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

*** and ***

Same with dying from a heart attack or stroke or from any cause—but, those in the olive oil and especially the nut group had significantly fewer strokes. All three groups were eating stroke-promoting diets; some people in all three groups had  strokes after eating these diets for years, and so ideally we’d choose diets that can stop or reverse the disease process, but the diet with added extra virgin olive oil caused about a third fewer strokes, and adding nuts seemed to cut their stroke risk nearly in half. If this worked as well in the general population, in the U.S. alone that would mean preventing 89,000 strokes a year. That’s would be like ten strokes an hour around the clock prevented simply by adding half an ounce of nuts to one’s daily diet.

*** end quote ***

BOTTOM LINE: Eat 1 ounce of nuts every day.

Seems like a simple Rx.

Solving a Colon Cancer Mystery
By: Dr. Michael Greger

*** begin quote ***

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States after lung cancer. The rates of lung cancer around the world vary by a factor of 10. If there was nothing we could do to prevent lung cancer—if it just happened at random—we’d assume that the rates everywhere would be about the same. But since there’s such a huge variation in rates, it seems like there’s probably some external cause. Indeed, we now know smoking is responsible for 90 percent of lung cancer cases. If we don’t want to die of the number-one cancer killer, we can throw 90 percent of our risk out the window just by not smoking.

There’s an even bigger variation around the world for colon cancer. It appears colon cancer doesn’t just happen—something makes it happen. If our lungs can get filled with carcinogens from smoke, maybe our colons are getting filled with carcinogens from food. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Limpopo sought to answer the question, “Why do African Americans get more colon cancer than native Africans?” Because colon cancer is extremely rare in native African populations, more than 50 times lower than rates of Americans, white or black.

*** end quote ***

My maternal grandmother died of colon cancer … painfully. My Mom had a near miss that required some surgical brilliance that gave her another 10 years of a pretty good life. I’ve recently had yet another colonoscopy that revealed some suspect tissue that has to come out. AND, I am following up aggressively.

Since it’s a “silent killer” that has no external symptoms until it’s too late, you have to be the Captain of your health are team.

Yes, it is — without a doubt — the most disgusting test to prep for. I do mine without anesthesia by personal preference. (I like to limit the things that can go wrong.) It’s no more painful than a case of constipation!

AND eat your veggies.

I was ASTONISHED how this tied right in with the episode: Ep. 647 Cancer: One Child’s Story, and Lessons Learned

Our Girl, my wife died of AML. Both these podcast really hit me hard.

I’ll be writing my next book on my experiences and lessons learned. I’ve been reenergized by these two podcasts.

WE need to change the system.

Imagine “not having a definition of health” and not having a RIGHT to try anything unobstructed by Gooferment.

Argh!

‘I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!’ I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell – ‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Things have got to change. But first, you’ve gotta get mad!… You’ve got to say, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Then we’ll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: [screaming at the top of his lungs] “I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!” — the character Howard Beale played by Peter Finch in the movie Network (1976)

ARGH!

Remember that when Gooferment politicians and bureaucrats talk about the “Affordable Healthcare Act”, they are not talking about “health”, “health care”, “health care insurance”, or something else. They are talking about CONTROL.

Argh!

HEALTH: How Not to Die

Sunday, March 27, 2016

Published on Feb 11, 2016
Dr. Greger visited Google NYC to discuss his new book – How Not to Die.

The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-recognized lecturer, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of death in America—heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson’s, high blood pressure, and more—and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives.

The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The 15 leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn’t have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger’s advice, all of it backed up by peer-reviewed scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer.

History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug—and without the side effects. What about liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation. Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (our #1 killer)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to help prevent the disease, but arrest and even reverse it.

In addition to showing what to eat to help prevent the top 15 causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen—a checklist of the foods we should try to consume every day. Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting edge nutritional science, these doctor’s orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives.

I attempt to follow all of his advice. Sometimes I even succeed. I hope that even that little effort will make a difference. Of course, I wear my seatbelt, ignore my cell phone, and look both ways if ever cross a street. So, I’ll probably get hit by lightening!

HEALTH: Hot dogs are a disaster

Hot Dogs: Questions and Answers

Consuming Hot Dogs Can Be Harmful to Your Health

*** begin quote ***

Multiple studies have determined that consumption of hot dogs can be a risk factor for childhood cancer.

Peters et al studied the relationship between the intake of certain foods and the risk of leukemia in children from birth to age 10 in Los Angeles County between 1980 and 1987. The study found that children who ate more than twelve hot dogs per month had nine times the normal risk of developing childhood leukemia.

*** end quote ***

I love bacon and I ate hot dogs.

Remember that old quote that “Swift once bragged that his slaughterhouses had become so sophisticated that they used “everything but the squeal.”

Since I’ve retired, probably starting back when I became “old” somehow, and started dating a pescatarian, I’ve been working on my diet. This story about nitrites didn’t surprise me.

Thanks to Weekly NutritionFacts.org Videos by Michael Greger, M.D. http://nutritionfacts.org/video/is-bacon-good-or-is-spinach-bad/ I knew that cured meats — like bacon, ham and hot dogs — were killers and why.

That’s not to say I don’t fall off the wagon with bacon or hot dogs or other meats.

But maybe the sauerkraut on the hot dog helps?

Boy, I miss them.

However, if I want to live to a 1,000, bye bye everything but fruit, nuts, and plants.

Laff, when I’m diagnosed as terminal, BOY! am I going to enjoy that time.

Sigh!

Till then, no fun eating.

How Much Longer Do Fruit and Vegetable Eaters Live?

In a study out of Taiwan, researchers concluded that spending just 50 cents a day on fruits or vegetables could buy people about a 10% drop in mortality. That’s quite a bargain. Imagine if there was a drug that—without side-effects—could lower our risk of death 10%. How much do you think drug companies would charge? Probably more than 50 cents.

Big Problem With Last Week’s Big Cholesterol News
THE ONLINE RISK CALCULATOR MAY SIGNIFICANTLY INFLATE RISK
By Kate Seamons, Newser Staff
Posted Nov 18, 2013 7:27 AM CST

*** begin quote ***

The changes to the way doctors prescribe cholesterol-lowering statins were described last week as “tectonic” and “profound”; today, the New York Times uses the phrase “major embarrassment.” The issue: the online risk calculator introduced by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology to flag candidates for statins may overestimate risk—hugely. The issue was apparently identified a year ago by two Harvard Medical School professors who had reviewed a draft version; their input never made it to those developing the calculator, and the professors noticed the same errors in the final calculator when it was revealed publicly on Tuesday.

*** end quote ***

And, there was the announcement by the Gooferment that dietary cholesterol doesn’t impact blood cholesterol numbers.

Disputing decades of “settled science”.

Then, into my email box drops this gem.

http://nutritionfacts.org/video/optimal-cholesterol-level/

Transcript: Optimal Cholesterol Level

*** begin quote ***

The optimal cholesterol level, the optimal “bad cholesterol” LDL level, Is 50 to 70. Accumulating data from multiple lines of evidence consistently demonstrate that that’s where a physiologically normal LDL level would be. That appears to be the threshold above which atherosclerosis and heart attacks develop.

That’s what we start out at birth with, that’s what fellow primates have, that’s the level seen in populations free of the heart disease epidemic, but we can also look at all the big randomized controlled cholesterol lowering trials. This is graphing the progression of atherosclerosis versus LDL cholesterol. More cholesterol, more atherosclerosis, but if you draw a line down through the points, you can estimate that the LDL level at which there is zero progression is down around 70.

*** and ***

Atherosclerosis is endemic in our population in part because the average person’s LDL level is up around 130, approximately twice the normal physiologic level. The reason the federal government doesn’t recommend everyone doesn’t shoot for even just under 100, is that despite the lower risk accompanying more optimal cholesterol levels, the intensity of clinical intervention required to achieve such levels for everyone in the population would financially overload the health care system. Drug usage would rise enormously. But they’re just assuming drugs are the only way to get our LDL that low, but those eating really plant based diets may hit the optimal cholesterol target without even trying. Just naturally nailing under 70.

*** end quote ***

As regular readers know, I’m changing my diet from mostly meat based to mostly plant based.

In part, because of these “scary videos”.

It’s amazing that “We, The Sheeple” have never heard this simple way of avoiding some really nasty health consequences.

I’m sure my maternal Grandmother would have never fed her family “things that would kill them”.

She died of Colon Cancer. If she’d known, maybe she’d have lived to a ripe old age.

So once again, we have the Gooferment mis-informing us either due to stupidity or laziness, or is there a bunch of Crony Capitalists in the woodpile somewhere.

Drugs are expensive and profitable. A vegan diet not so much so.

I remember one nutritionist on the boob tube pleading that “if your food comes in a box, then you would be better off eating the box!”.

I laughed at the time, but many a true word is carried in a joke!
