The Hypocrisy of the Heritage Foundation

The U.S. is fighting separate wars, whatever the government chooses to call them, in some half dozen nations all at the same time: some hot, some cold, some lukewarm. We have roughly 800 foreign military bases in over 100 different countries. Since World War II our country has bombed the following nations: China 1945-46, Korea 1950-53, China 1950-53, Guatemala 1954, Indonesia 1958, Cuba 1959-60, Guatemala 1960, Belgian Congo 1964, Guatemala 1964, Dominican Republic 1965-66, Peru 1965, Laos 1964-73, Vietnam 1961-73, Cambodia 1969-70, Guatemala 1967-69, Lebanon 1982-84, Grenada 1983-84, Libya 1986, El Salvador 1981-92, Nicaragua 1981-90, Iran 1987-88, Libya 1989, Panama 1989-90, Iraq 1991, Kuwait 1991, Somalia 1992-94, Bosnia 1995, Iran 1998, Sudan 1998, Afghanistan 1998, Yugoslavia – Serbia 1999, Afghanistan 2001, Libya 2011.This is not a national defense, it is a national offense.

Personal Finance Expert Ric Edelman Reveals Solution to the Social Security Crisis

Friday, July 27, 2018

Based on the principle of compound growth, the T.R.U.S.T. Fund for America calls for the government to set aside a one-time amount of $7,000 for each child born in the United States, and to repeat this annually for the next 35 years. The money would be placed in an investment portfolio determined by an expert panel appointed by the president and Congress. After 35 years, the government would receive back its initial outlay, plus inflation, and use the proceeds to fund the program for children born during the next 35-year cycle.

Win for Public Right to Know: Court Vacates Injunction Against Publishing the Law

Wednesday, July 18, 2018

Industry Groups Want to Control Access to Legal Rules and Regulations San Francisco – A federal appeals court today ruled that industry groups cannot control publication of binding laws and standards. This decision protects the work of Public.Resource.org (PRO), a nonprofit organization that works to improve access to government documents.

That would be “funny” peculiar if you could know the standard a law was passed to enforce.  Anyone see where this trend takes us?  Secret laws to go along with secret (FISA) courts!

Argh!

NJ Veteran Claims Police Tried To Take His Guns Without Due Process

Monday, July 16, 2018

New Jersey now has a law on the books that allows the government to confiscate guns from anyone considered a threat without anything approaching due process. There’s a slightly more complicated process, but in its essence, that’s pretty much exactly what is at play.

Man Shoots Burglar, Family Predictably Cries Foul

Sunday, July 15, 2018

What is it about family that makes it so you can be absolutely convinced that despite them engaging in a criminal act, they’re still somehow angels? I ask because it seems that no matter what the circumstances, when someone gets shot, the family will invariably step up and pontificate on just why that person shouldn’t have been killed.

Kidnappers: The Tyranny of Child Protective Services

Saturday, July 7, 2018

242 years ago American colonists declared independence from England, in the name of personal liberty. What would it take for Americans to once again declare independence from an oppressive government? For the colonists, it was excessive taxation without representation.

Source: Kidnappers: The Tyranny of Child Protective Services

*** begin quote ***

No warrant needed to take a child from a parent!

*** end quote ***

Having some familiarity personally with “the system”, judges need to be held to the highest standards of fairness and impartiality.  It’s a hard thing to separate a child from the parents.  BUT sometimes it is for safety and in the child’s best interest.  We ALL are responsible for the choices we make.  Parents, especially those who are drug addicts, need to be made aware that society will not allow children to be harmed.

Now I have a tough time squaring that with “abortion rights”, but that’s a discussion for another day.

U.S. allies fear Trump will reduce U.S. troops in Europe | McClatchy Washington Bureau

If Self-Serving Celebs Want to Help Vulnerable Kids, They Should Look at US Militarism & Foster Care

Tuesday, July 3, 2018

Hollywood celebrities are furious over Trump’s policy of separating immigrant children from their families, but their outrage is selective and often self-serving. In recent weeks, border separation has been the top story. Media coverage has included horrific pictures and videos of young immigrant children in anguish at being taken from their families.

Source: If Self-Serving Celebs Want to Help Vulnerable Kids, They Should Look at US Militarism & Foster Care

*** begin quote ***

Another problem with the spate of Tinseltown voices demanding action to stop Trump’s brutal family-separation policy is that these stars didn’t get up in arms when President Obama had a similarly callous policy towards illegal immigrant families.

*** end quote ***

While the policy stinks  — there are reports of traffickers faking it  — it’s another “political” astro-turf like the “anti-war” protests.

WASHINGTON — Navy Secretary Richard Spencer has issued letters of censure to a retired rear admiral and two other officers found to have accepted inappropriate gifts and maintained unethical relationships with “Fat” Leonard Francis, the central figure in a widespread fraud investigation.

The censures – formal, permanent acknowledgements of wrongdoing – were issued last week to retired Rear Adm. Richard Wren, retired Capt. Timothy Conroy and Capt. Charles Johnson, the Navy announced Wednesday in a statement. The letters do not impact retirement benefits or pay for the officers reprimanded.

Why doesn’t it impact pay or retirement benefits?  Why aren’t there criminal penalties?

USB-C to USB-A Adapter

Friday, June 29, 2018

My tech adoption generally consists of long periods of inertia punctuated with the occasional frenzy of replacement. But I’m very glad to see USB C catch on, even if it means one of those frenzies. While none of our household’s phones are yet equipped with USB C, my Asus Chromebook is, as is my GoPro camera — and I know it’s the wave of the (near-term) future.
