McBookaire: Field experiment with McBa

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

I ordered a ‘man bag’ for McBa. (Mac Book Air … I’m always accused of using acronyms) I took the 35$ one that looked like it would suffice. Some of them are price in the hundreds. Guess they think if you spring for a McBa, then you’ll spend any amount for anything. Maybe Martha; not me. The dumb thing didn’t come with a shoulder strap so I borrowed one. I’ll gripe about that vendor when I get around to it.

Any way I took McBa out in its ‘man bag’ and it worked perfectly. Fired up the vwubbie (Verizon Wireless Broad Band usb modem). And everything worked fine.

There was a wifi signal but I couldn’t connect. Argh!

McBa ran for more than 2 hours on the battery driving vwubbie.

I as careful to shut down; not just close the lid. Just closing the lid drains the battery in 12 hours.

So far, I’m pleased.

RANT: the ONLY chance we have to get away from the ‘gooferment education’ paradigm is ‘home schooling’

Subway Bans Homeschooled Kids from Essay Contest
By Ned Barnett

*** begin quote ***

Subway — the multi-national fast-food sub-shop giant — has shot themselves in the foot. Again. The goal of their latest promotion was to win the loyalty of parents of grade school-aged kids — to increase market share, revenue and profits. It was supposed to be a simple exercise in business marketing and promotion.

*** end quote ***

No Subway for me.

As a nation, the ONLY chance we have to get away from the ‘gooferment education’ paradigm is ‘home schooling’. Every time they embarrass and show up the teacher’s union driven gooferment system for the high-priced under-performing dud it is; that’s one more possible pin tin the balloon.

We can only hope to escape this institutionalize stupidity.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — Numbers come precisely from the agile mind and nimble tongue of Frank Buckles, who seems bemused to say that 4,734,991 Americans served in the military during America’s involvement in the First World War and that 4,734,990 are gone. He is feeling fine, thank you for asking.

Amazing at 107!

FUN: TWO WAYS TO LOOK AT EVERYTHING

Monday, May 26, 2008

FROM MY LUDDITE FRIEND

Disclaimer: He is a vacuum cleaner of all sorts of inet forwards. He seems to get every kind of junk mail from friends and relatives which he shares some with me that he feels are “interesting’? Luckily, I don’t have many friends or relatives. At least the kind that send this stuff along. (Although I do have one wacky one who is into “inspirational” chain mails. Have to watch her carefully, lest she fly off on angel’s wings to Nigeria!) But every once and while, Luddite comes up with one that is worth sharing. Here’s one. With no attribution or identification. For your reading pleasure, a bit of humor from Luddite!

*** begin quote ***

TWO WAYS TO LOOK AT EVERYTHING

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.

My wife asks, ‘Do you know her?’ ‘Yes,’ I sighed, ‘She’s my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn’t been sober since.’

‘My God!’ says my wife, ‘Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?’

So you see, there really are 2 ways to look at everything

*** end quote ***

LOL!

Wives do have a unique ability to return husbands to reality. Usually with a thump. This just highlights that eternal truth.

Not every psychological ‘eureka’ has to be a stuffy principle. Sometimes they can come disguised as a joke.

Submitted for what it is worth to you.

LIBERTY: Take a moment on the Memorial Day Monday

Monday, May 26, 2008

I hope we all take a moment on the Memorial Day Monday.

Not because some politician tells us we should at 3pm for their agenda. But, because we allowed undeclared wars to happen in our name and good people acted on what we said we needed.

I plan to take that moment to:

* Pray for all the boys and girls who gave their lives for what they believed in.

* Recognize the ongoing sacrifices being made.

* Value the ‘breakage’ in the wounded; insist that ‘we’ do right by them.

* Grieve with all the families that are picking up afterwards.

* And, finally, hope that we all begin to hold the politicians accountable for their words and actions that put ‘our people’ in harm’s way in our name.

You know if I could I’d bring them all home on Tuesday – Wednesday latest.

I will pray they all come home in one piece.

And that ‘we’ get back to a Department of Defense and return to the Constitutional America of Liberty. We seem to have lost our way.

What will you do – or what did you do – on Monday? Picnic and party? Listen to more political rhetoric? Forget it all and vacation? Tube out?

Sadly,
An tired old fool

TECH SOFTWARE: “licensed, not sold” “barbara streisand”

Saturday, May 24, 2008

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080523-court-smacks-autodesk-affirms-right-to-sell-used-software.html

Court smacks Autodesk, affirms right to sell used software
By Timothy B. Lee | Published: May 23, 2008 – 12:21PM CT

***Begin Quote***

If Jones’s ruling is upheld on appeal, it will have important consequences for the software industry, where the legal fiction that software is merely licensed is widely employed. In addition to discouraging the market for used software, software firms have also attempted to use the “licensed, not sold” theory to enforce restrictions on reverse engineering that would otherwise be fair use under copyright law. If software is sold, rather than licensed, then no license is required to install and use the software, and the terms of shrink-wrap licenses may not be legally binding.

The Autodesk case is not the only case regarding the first sale doctrine working its way through the courts. Another lawsuit filed last summer concerns another eBay seller who sells used promo CDs. Like Vernor, the plaintiff in that case faced repeated DMCA takedown notices and sued to vindicate his right to sell used merchandise online. EFF is representing the plaintiff in that case, and McSherry tells Ars that while there are important differences between the cases, the opinion bodes well for EFF’s case because “it affirms that copyright owners can’t use license restrictions to strip away first sale rights.”

***End Quote***

About time this fictional non-sense was brought to a halt.

This will be a boon, and boom to software developers and users in general.
