RANT: Why isn’t it “grounding”?

When the quarterback “spikes” the ball to stop the clock, why isn’t that “grounding”?

More kudos to the Giants! Tom Brady was not ‘bad’…he has not been bad all year long, but he was….was harassed, hurt, frightened, shaken up, had to rush his throws…I guess you can call that bad, but there was a reason for it! They were playing an inspired Giants defense that made the NE offense look like a second rate team. Nobody else has been able to do that all year….congrats to those mighty NY Giants!

Thanks for explanation. Still lousy rule. imho

The Giants did pull one out of the hat. I’m still of a mind to say TomB was “bad”, more so than the Giants were “good”. Still they did pull out a couple of rabbits on the way there. But then they are paid grazillions to do just that. So they have a higher standard to impress me than say your average Little League team. :-)

That’s why I’m an old crank!

    FJ,

There is a special section in the rulebook about “clocking” the ball. It actually was put in because the old method of throwing over the receivers head out of bounds was deemed as wasting everyones times and occasionally giving a fan a football. So by definition, I think it reads that in the last 5 minutes of a half, the QB may “clock” the ball without penalty as long as he uses a forward motion and the ball does NOT hit a lineman.

PS – the forward motion one came up in a Saints game a several years ago when Steve Walsh or Kerry Collins (cant’ remember) turned and spiked it backwards (lateralled it in effect) and the officials called it a fumble recovered by the defense.

    CONGRATS to you GIANTS!!

Yeah…he obviously is not out of the npocket is he? Good question my friend. Someone ought to throw the red flag some time to challange it, and see what happens. :-)
P.S. It’s probably hidden in the rulebook somewhere, I will have to do some research (no charge).
    P.S.S. Yeah Giants!
