McBookaire: Stupidity is a good way to leave yourself without power.

Friday, June 27, 2008

Last night, didn’t notice the plug was out and McBa was sitting in hibernate. Today noticed it. Battery is under a quarter. Wonder what happens when it goes flat? Any way, cant take it with me today to doc office because it’s so low. Maybe that is a design problem. It should shutdown after hibernate for say an hour?

Money: Visited a bank; cd rates are nuts!

Friday, June 27, 2008

Term Rate
Money Market .275
3 Months .250
7 Months .275
13 Months .225
16 Months .350
2 Years .325
3 Years .425
5 Years .500

This table makes little sense to me. Money Market pays more than a 90 day CD? Seven, thirteen, and sixteen month terms? 125 basis points for a delta of three months on the 13 month CD. One hundred basis points for an extra year off the 2 year CD BUT only 75 basis points for two more years off the 3 years CD.

And, they make no effort to teach their Customers about a CD ladder and eliminating interest term sensitivity on your “mad money”. ANd minimizing interest rate risk.

(Ohh you don’t understand that concept? You should always have an emergency fund of some number of months of your run rate. Then a base of savings. Then investments. In your ‘savings tier’, how could you always be earning the Five Year CD rate? Yup, five five year CDs with different maturities. You can always get it by paying a small penalty. How do I do that? Each year on your birthday, you scrape up all your change and go get a Five Year CD. On your sixth birthday, you roll it over and add a little to it. You are an adult; aren’t you? When you get to 20k$, you move it to a different bank. FDIC insurance 100k. What do you think pension funds, insurance compnaies, and brokerages do?)

Now, we all know why I’m not running a bank! I’d try and use my ad dollars to explain how to ‘save’.

RANT: Airlines “suck”?

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Recent Iowa trip was a hoot. It gave me enough to blog about for eons.

Let’s take the flight home on Continental’s ExpressJet service from Omaha NE to EWR.

First, departure time was changed from 1115 local to 1150 local. Never an explanation. I had printed boardign passes the night prior that say 1115. No one EVER mentions a word about that.

OK, we board. And, push from the gate.

We get out on the taxiway, and a bad news announcement.

(Argh, note to self and all travelers, carry a recorder to capture the announcements!)

Something like, EWR just closed due to THUNDERSTORMS. We have no gate. Get out the way. We will be sitting for an hour out somewhere quiet. No gate; not worth going back and unloading and reloading.

They let us use “electronic devices”. Cell phones galore. They fed us. Yuck, (We carry our own always, no big deal.)

An hour later, still closed. 45 minutes more, not worth going back and unloading and reloading.

Take off. BUT, warned that we will have some loops to allow EWR traffic to clear. Argh!

A leisurely flight, air time was supposed to be under three hours. It was closer to four.

Arrive EWR some four hours after schedule.

Arrive a EWR. Luggage comes out somewhere. (Not where we were told.)

Our limo driver says “What thunderstorms?”

Who do you believe?

Argh!

TECH SERVICE: Vangard requires Adobe PDF Reader! Yuck!!!

Vangard requires Adobe PDF Reader! Yuck!!!

Adobe stinks. It’s a pig in terms of size and complexity. You put out a pdf. Why can’t I use an Open Source free product to view the pdf? And, it used to work. SO you’ve introduced a change without notification. Just like your split authentication change, it does zip from my perspective except make my life more difficult.

TECH SERVICE: LOGMEIN free

Monday, June 23, 2008

Has worked very nicely from the road. The hotel’s wifi is deadly slow. But moving up to the Verizon wireless broadband gives good performance. (It should for those prices.)

FUN: “Why do they lock gas station bathrooms?”

Monday, June 23, 2008

“Why do they lock gas station bathrooms?” he once mused. “Are they afraid someone will clean them?”

George Carlin died. I thought he held up stupidity to ridicule. Adult, but funny. Necessary for a society that does so many stupid things. Wouldn’t want a steady diet of him on TV; better than what passes for the 11PM news! imho
