POLITICAL: Who is a libertarian?

*** begin quote ***

Who is a libertarian?

Zero Aggression Principle (“Zap”)

“Zero Aggression Principle”:

A libertarian is a person who believes that no one has the right, under any circumstances, to initiate force against another human being for any reason whatever; nor will a libertarian advocate the initiation of force, or delegate it to anyone else.

Those who act consistently with this principle are libertarians, whether they realize it or not. Those who fail to act consistently with it are not libertarians, regardless of what they may claim.

— L. Neil Smith

Formerly called the “Non-Aggression Principle”, or “NAP”

You really want to spend some time with Ruwart’s “Healing Our World”. I can only speak for this particular little L libertarian.

“Law” as imposed by a gang of people calling themselves “The State” is immoral. “THE PHILOSOPHY OF LIBERTY”, a short video highlighted on the sidebar, does a great job of explaining. Basically, if I don’t have the right to initiate force upon you, then no one can do it in my name. And, no matter how many of “me” that you can “collect”, you never can add up more that allows you to impose force on some one. Everyone has to voluntarily agree to bind themselves to the “law” you seek to impose.

“Punishment” is a dumb concept. Libertarians seem to agree that the concept should be “restitution”. There’s usually something like restitution plus the cost of the loss. On rape and murder, the model begins to break down, but enforcing restitution gives a much better starting point and result.

Just to clarify, how does the law come into this? Are you saying that Libertarians wouldn’t support a punishment for real crimes like theft, rape, etc? Just wondering if you could expand on that.
