Yet Another Reason To Torch the TV

*** begin quote ***

“Officials in California want prime-time TV shows to help promote President Obama’s healthcare law. … ‘A number of popular television programs and personalities such as Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, the Biggest Loser, Dr. Oz and others will be approached and pitched to incorporate story lines or mentions of health care reform that would reinforce campaign messages,’” according to the “marketing plan” from “California’s insurance exchange — a new marketplace [sic], created by” Obummercare.

Apparently, the idea that propaganda should be subtle and hidden has waned as Our Rulers’ contempt for us waxes.

I’ve debated that Obamacare muddles “health”, “health care”, “health care insurance”, and / or something else.

Now we find out that the Gooferment is using / expect Hollywood to brainwash us.

Sorry, but if any of my favorite comedies pick up this theme. They are toast!

They can join Jane Fonda in my dog house!

  1. I found episodes with similar themes (although usually not carried to QUITE that extreme) on over a dozen shows and sitcoms during a period of several years that I kept my eyes on the listings. Evidently the networks were paid off for them by being excused from various amounts of PSA broadcast minute obligations depending on how well they worked the subliminal antidrug and antismoking propaganda into their shows. At $50,000 or so per minute for good ad time, the networks made out pretty well by having their characters kick the habit etc.etc

Heck in Dexter, that wholesome family show where the *hero* is a serial killer who dismembers his victims every week, the network was besieged by complaints about the children who’d be influenced by one of the female lead characters sneaking out in back of the police station for a smoke once a month or so. The network finally caved in and she quit in the fourth season, and to make up for their sins the only smokers recently have been a gang of pedophiles living under a bridge and a sleazy motel operator with a voice like sandpaper.

  2. Thanks for sharing this. I just posted over at the site Lew linked to with the story:

This is old news to anyone active in the fight against the antismoking movement. They pioneered using such things to engineer our thinking about smoking and secondhand smoke in the 90s. I wrote about it extensively in Brains over five years ago, AND I wrote about the dangers that this method of propaganda could pose in other areas once it had been tested out on the smoking issue.

Here’s a passage where I talked about one episode of 7th Heaven:

“One particular episode of 7th Heaven featured an evil twin smoking after his smoking father passed away from lung cancer, while one of the regular teen characters started smoking, influencing two toddlers to emulate him by pretending to smoke with crayons as another teen regular kept loudly proclaiming all smokers’ stupidity and another younger teen quit a newly acquired habit to prove that he wasn’t stupid. To top it all off, yet another smoking character was thrown into the mix to rudely blow smoke in a nonsmoker’s face at an outdoor café while the home she was house-sitting simultaneously burned down from one of her cigarettes… after which she simply lit up another smoke and stalked off with a comment about the place being insured and nonsmokers being uptight! (No, I am not making this up.)”

Look at how attitudes about smoking have changed in the last 20 years and think about the subtleties of how that took place. You might be surprised.
